Weekly Update from Pastor Adam - September 5, 2025

Dear Resurrection Family,

As you read this, LaVon and I are on a flight back to Kansas City. While you’ve seen me preaching from England these last three Sundays, I’m feeling a bit homesick as I write this, missing my kids, granddaughter, our dogs and you!

Why did we spend the last month leading these three groups to explore our Methodist heritage, and preaching three sermons on this from England? I reminded our final group this week of something Dr. Lovett Weems, former president of Saint Paul School of Theology, once shared in a sermon, and I’m paraphrasing, “As Methodists, we have a compelling theology and message, one that could change the world and reach people no other church is reaching…if we could only remember it.” I wanted 36 young Resurrection leaders the first week I was here, 80 young clergy from across the US the second week, 280 Resurrection members this week, and all of you through the sermons, to remember our theology and message as United Methodists.

I’ll be leading worship at Leawood this weekend, but since I’m just arriving back, I’ve invited a very special guest preacher to share the message at Leawood, online and all of our locations this weekend.

THIS WEEKEND: RABBI MICHAEL ZEDEK ON TAKING MIRACLES SERIOUSLY

Rabbi Michael Zedek is Rabbi Emeritus of Temple B’nai Jehudah, where he served as senior rabbi for 26 years. He is a dedicated community activist, scholar, and teacher. He currently serves as Rabbi-in-Residence at Saint Paul School of Theology, the United Methodist seminary located at Resurrection Leawood. He is also a regular presenter at Rancho La Puerta (the oldest and, perhaps, best known spirituality retreat center in North America). He has received numerous awards, including a Fulbright-Hays Grant and a Danforth Graduate Fellowship for outstanding teaching.

An accomplished storyteller with a refreshing, humorous voice, Rabbi Zedek will be sharing from his recent book Taking Miracles Seriously: A Journey to Everyday Spirituality. The book, which takes readers on a search for spiritual sustenance in everyday life, has been described as a master course on how to craft an enriched and enriching spiritual life. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to worship this weekend and learn from Rabbi Zedek. I am looking forward to welcoming Rabbi Zedek to Resurrection this weekend.

NEXT WEEK: A LETTER FROM JOHN

On September 14, I’ll kick off a two-part sermon series on the First Letter of John. The ancient words of John’s first epistle describe God’s love and speak powerfully into our lives today.

AFFIRMATIONS CONCERT THIS SATURDAY!

I know I’ve shared this several times, but I really hope you will attend Affirmations: A  Night of Worship tomorrow, Sept. 6, at 6:30 pm in the Leawood Sanctuary. Seldom can you experience a program like this, with so many talented musicians. I know you will be inspired. Led by Isaac Cates, part of our worship staff, known across the world for his work in gospel music, featuring Grammy-nominated special guest Oleta Adams and award-winning vocalist Callie Day, along with an amazing group of gospel musicians and singers, this will be an amazing free, family-friendly event. Bring your friends and join us. Here’s a link to what you will experience. Below are flyers that you can download and share with a friend.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR FALL STUDENT RETREATS

Two of the most meaningful events in our student ministry each year are our fall student retreats. Middle School “Meta” happens November 7-8, and High School “Activate” runs November 21-23. Registration is now open for both amazing retreats. These weekends give students a break from the usual school grind and everything that comes with it, to develop friendships, have fun and to explore faith as they grow closer to God. You can learn more and sign up for Meta here and Activate here.

FIRST GRADE PRAYER MILESTONE SUNDAY, SEPT. 21

In our Kids Ministry, we have identified spiritual milestones for children as they grow in faith. For first graders, this is prayer and learning and practicing the Lord’s Prayer. Our first graders have been learning it in Kids’ Ministry each week. On September 21, at all our locations in worship, we’ll celebrate our first graders as they lead us in the Lord’s Prayer, and, later that day, first graders and their grown-ups (at least one grown-up is required) can enjoy a retreat where they’ll learn about prayer while making a fun prayer craft to use at home. This is going to be a wonderful chance for our first graders to remind us all about the power of prayer in our faith journey. If you have a first grader in your life, check out this opportunity and register them here.

SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH • RESURRECTION RESOURCES

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. We believe that even in our darkest times, there is always hope, and we want to walk with you through your challenging seasons. If you are concerned about your safety or the safety of others, we encourage you to call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room. In addition, you can call or text 988, which will connect you with a mental health professional. Resurrection offers a variety of resources to support you that you can find at Resurrection.church/crisis. We also have counseling services available at Resurrection that you can learn about here.

CHURCH LEADERSHIP NOMINATIONS

We are currently seeking volunteer leaders to serve in elected positions on key committees: Finance, Trustees, Staff Parish Relations, Foundation, Nominations, and Lay Delegates to Annual Conference. We need leaders who represent the wide demographics of our congregation and are passionate about serving Resurrection. Take a look at committee descriptions and the requirements here and submit your application to our Nominating Committee by the deadline of Monday, October 6.

MAKING SENSE OF FAITH PODCAST: WHAT WILL HEAVEN BE LIKE?

My podcast this week includes some topics I’ve previously shared regarding heaven. There are two questions that I’m frequently asked about heaven: What is heaven like? and What happens to non-Christians? These are challenging, and I don’t have simple, easy answers, but in this podcast, I offer a biblically grounded exploration that respects both Scripture and human dignity. You can listen to or watch and share it with friends by clicking here.

PRE-ORDER YOUR 35th ANNIVERSARY T-SHIRT BY THIS SUNDAY

We have a great Resurrection t-shirt being created to celebrate Resurrection and its 35 years in ministry this October. They are a terrific way to witness to your faith with a cool message. T-shirts are $13, and you can order online here and pick them up at the Resurrection location you select starting next Sunday. If you would prefer, you can order directly from our vendor here and have shirts shipped directly to your home (with additional shipping and processing fees). Here’s what the t-shirts look like:

GREEK FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND

My godfather, Lou Petrakos, reached out to me this week, inviting me to the annual Kansas City Greek Festival this weekend. He’s Greek Orthodox and a leader at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 120th and Wornall Road. If you are looking for something fun to do, it’s going on all weekend with great food and entertainment from 6-10 tonight, noon to 10 pm Saturday, and noon to 4 pm Sunday. Here are the details.

I thought I might end by sharing with you how our Wesley tour ended this week on Wednesday night at 5 pm. 270 of us, mostly Resurrection members, gathered in Wesley’s Chapel in London. It was a chapel Wesley built in 1777-1778, and where he often preached in the 70’s and 80’s. I stood in the pulpit Wesley preached from, and we remembered Wesley’s emphasis on sanctification – the pursuit of holiness characterized by our love for God and a life lived in love towards others. And then we closed by singing Charles Wesley’s hymn, “Love Divine All Loves Excelling.” It was a moving end to our journey. Below is a photo of this group of 200+ Resurrection members as we worshiped together in this historic space.

Can’t wait to be back in worship in person this weekend!
