Backpacks for Hunger

At Resurrection’s partner schools, 75-100% of students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. These students depend on their school lunch and breakfast programs for the majority of their nutrition needs during the week but don’t have this option over the weekend. Our Backpacks for Hunger program provides nutritious food to help students get through the weekend and return to school on Monday ready to focus on their schoolwork.

Ready to participate? Groups and individuals can serve at the weekly fills. Fills typically take place on Wednesday afternoons, beginning at 4 pm and last up to 90 minutes. The work requires a lot of walking as we fill around 1,500 bags each week. Children aged nine and up are welcome with one adult for every three children. If your group would like to participate in an upcoming fill event, contact Justin Burnett for more information and to register. Individuals can learn more and register here.

Other ways to serve:

  • Backpack Angel: Become a Backpack Angel to help fight weekend hunger for over 1,500 students each week. Our Backpacks for Hunger Ministry provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare food for children who lack access to school meals on weekends. Your support ensures these students have the sustenance they need to thrive. Join us in making a meaningful impact in their lives. You can provide food for a student for a year for $225, or $25/monthGive online and become a Backpack Angel.
  • Delivery Saints: Become a Delivery Saint and play a crucial role in our Backpacks for Hunger Ministry! Each Thursday, from 8 am to 12 pm, you’ll help ensure that food sacks reach students in need. This role involves heavy lifting and may require driving the church’s box truck. Additionally, on Tuesdays from 7 am to 1 pm, you’ll pick up empty tubs from local elementary schools, which involves moderate lifting and possible truck driving. If you’re ready to make a difference, contact Bruce Gaddis at deliveryteam@cor.org.
  • Do a Protein Bar Drive: Including protein bars in our Backpack for Hunger program offers a practical solution for ensuring children have access to nutritious, non-perishable snacks over the weekend. These bars provide essential protein, helping to sustain energy and support healthy growth when school meals aren’t available. Your contribution makes a significant difference in the lives of struggling families. To support this effort, please consider making a monetary donation HERE!. For more information, contact Justin Burnett.
  • Pray for the Children: Each week as they receive the supplemental weekend food.

All activities take place at Resurrection Leawood Campus, Building A, Lower Level Mission Space.
