7 When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host, 9 and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11 For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
This past week I had the honor to preach at the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church virtual revival. As I read our scripture from Isaiah, I thought about the sermon that I preached. I spoke about the importance of carrying the light while we are in our dark moments.
We may encounter days of distress, disappointment, doubt and even depression. What we can rely on is the God-given light that we carry inside each one of us. I think God uses disappointments to grab our attention and then God encourages us, empowers us, strengthens, and guides us so that through our own inner work, that we can grow into the people that God would have us be!
Let’s pray:
As we move into a darker season of fall and winter, we pray that your light will continue to lead us and guide us on our path. Remind us that as we slip into moments of disappointment or distress we can know that you are there in the midst. We give you thanks each day for the ability to grow into new seasons of life and for our community and healthcare professionals. Help us each day to shed our old selves and rise anew in your light! All of God’s children said, “Amen!”
This week's prayer tip is by Jessica Lovell, who serves as a Connection & Care Pastor at Resurrection Overland Park.
