Daily Scripture

Exodus 3:1-4, NRSV

Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, “I must turn aside and look at this great sight and see why the bush is not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.”

Daily Reflection & Prayer

I was on an early morning run when I turned a corner and was suddenly presented with a majestic scene. My neighborhood park lay before me, a thick layer of mist draped across the field near the baseball diamond. Beyond that, the rising sun had just crested the tree line, flooding the mist with an otherworldly golden glow. It was stunning.
I did something I hardly ever do: I stopped. I stopped running and simply stood there, taking in this glorious sight.
Any other morning, I might have run right past without noticing that the field was aflame with golden light. Any other morning, I might have been too early to see the mist. Any other morning, I might have been too late, after the sun had burned it away. But this morning—I noticed.
“Thank you, God,” I whispered. “This didn’t have to happen—but it did.”
Moses noticed too. When he saw a bush burning without being consumed, he turned aside. And when God saw that Moses was willing to draw near, God spoke.
May we all do what Moses did. May we notice, turn aside, and move toward God’s presence.
I encourage you to pray this prayer:
Prayer
God,
Give me eyes to see what you are doing around me.
Give me ears to hear your quiet voice.
Give me feet to move closer to you.
Give me hands to do your work.
Give me a heart that longs for you.
And give me a voice that says, “Here I am.”
Amen.
