Day 2

We ended our day yesterday excited to land in Kampala around 3:00 am. Clearing passport control, we learned most of our bags with supplies remained in Amsterdam.  So.. why not get to know and demonstrate love and patience with those great baggage agents who were there all night waiting for us to arrive?  We arrived at our hotel by about 6 (am) caught a couple of hours of sleep, had a great buffet breakfast, and hit the road by 11am.

First stop, the Uganda Counseling Support and Services, where we were greeted by smiles, singing, and dancing from students and employees, then heard presentations and toured the facilities which are still under construction.  When completed, the center will be a hub for mental health services in the region.

After driving 2 hours we had a late lunch with Stanley, one of our clinic partners for the week, then took a short, guided boat ride to the northern edge of Lake Victoria, the source of the majestic Nile River and a region that was the subject of KC author Candice Millard’s book “River of the Gods”.  We witnessed local birds, monitor lizards, monkeys, and even otters along the shore.  The excursion energized us for the week of service ahead, as we look forward to a more complete night of sleep ahead of our first clinic day tomorrow.

Reflecting on the experience thus far, we are all enchanted by the beauty of the country and the warmth of the Ugandans who have welcomed us!
