Common Questions

Master’s level student interns offer counseling at the Leawood campus for mild to moderate mental health needs. All counseling sessions will be recorded for supervision and training purposes, as our counselors are master’s students.

These recordings are confidential and will only be reviewed by authorized supervisors to ensure quality care.

These are students from area universities in the process of completing their Master’s degrees in counseling or marriage and family therapy.

They offer fresh perspectives and are trained in evidence-based practices, under the close supervision of experienced professionals.

We understand some people may not be comfortable being recorded or would like to be seen by an experienced mental health professional. Here is a valuable comprehensive resource of licensed local providers: Psychologytoday.com

Your needs will be evaluated by our counseling staff. If we believe your needs can be addressed by our counseling interns, you’ll be placed on our wait list.

Once an intern has space become available, you’ll be contacted to schedule an initial session.

Our interns are equipped to deal with mild to moderate mental health needs.

If it’s determined you will be better served by a licensed therapist, we will offer to provide you with a few referrals based on your needs, location and financial circumstances.

Our counseling interns are accessible to our church family and the community. You do not need to be a member or a visitor to request counseling services.

This service is not intended for immediate crisis needs. Depending on the demand and our current staffing level, it may take as long as a few months to be placed with an intern. If you need urgent help, please call the 988 mental health line or 911, or visit the nearest emergency room.

If you have identified a spiritual component to your challenges, we strongly encourage that you seek pastoral guidance.

If you would like to speak to one of our pastors, contact information for each location can be found at: Request Care – Resurrection Church

Isabel Seiter-Bruce
Intern

Hello! My name is Isabel Bruce and I am 2 semesters away from graduating with my Masters in Counseling Psychology from Avila University. My goals post graduation are to continue working with children in the mental health setting; specifically those with challenging behaviors and/or special needs. I am a dancer at heart! I grew up dancing for 20 years and then began teaching dance for 3 years after that. I have 2 dogs, Cowboy Dan and Patsy, who keep me energized! Other hobbies I enjoy are singing, crafts, and coffee dates with friends!

Miranda Mills
Intern

I am a counseling intern from MidAmerica Nazarene University. I am in the Marriage, Couple, Family track. After I graduate, I would love to go into private practice helping couples, families, and individuals. I want to also specialize in perinatal counseling because I have a strong passion for that specific clientele. I have a daughter who is 5 and a son who is 2 and they are my world. They are partly the reason I pushed myself to go back to school and pursue a career in counseling. I want my kids to be proud of me and to know there is no specific order in life you have to go through to achieve your goals and pursue your dreams.

Kristi Morrison
Intern

Hello! My name is Kristi, and I live in Honolulu, Hawaii. I am excited to join the team and complete my internship in Kansas. I am in the process of completing my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at Colorado Christian University. My husband is Active Duty in the Navy and stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam in Hawaii. After graduation, I hope to work with military service members and their families. For fun, I like to crochet, specifically amigurumi, which in Japanese means “knit or crocheted stuffed toy”.

Lydia Svoboda
Intern

I’m in the MS in Counseling Psychology program at the University of Kansas (where we have only a general track). I’ve lived in the Kansas City area my whole life, besides undergrad in Lincoln, Nebraska and a semester abroad in England, where I first developed a bit of an obsession with traveling and expanding my worldview. I love to learn and write, especially about people and philosophy/theology. I’m not certain yet about my plans post-graduation, but I think I would like to open a private practice and focus on individual and/or couples counseling. I have some professional experience in ministry, legal mediation, and end-of-life care, and I’m hoping to use and build on what I’ve learned so far to become a more well-rounded and developed counselor and individual through this internship. I’m so excited to be joining the incredible Care team at COR!

Cole Schilling
Intern

I’m in the MS of Counseling Psychology program with an emphasis on clinical mental health at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC). I’ve lived in Missouri my whole life and I went to Mizzou for my undergraduate degree. At this point, my post-graduation plan is to be a mental health counselor in some capacity, whether that be in a community or private setting. Right now, I am most interested in individual general mental health counseling with adults but am open to opportunities to work with kids and couples here to see how I like it. My professional experience is mainly in crisis intervention as I have worked for the 988-crisis line as a quality assurance specialist for a bit over 2 years now. I love to be active as I lift weights and run often, I love to be outside in nature, and I enjoy golfing and chess. The fun fact that I always use is that I can solve a Rubix cube in under a minute! I am excited to develop as a counselor and gain new experiences through this opportunity!

Jill Nicholson
Intern

I am a counseling intern from Avila University, working toward my Master of Science in Counseling Psychology. Though I’m still exploring where my career will take me after graduation, I’m excited about the different opportunities to connect with and support the community during my time here! Outside of work and school, I enjoy reading and being creative- like taking art classes. One of the toughest things I’ve tried is the pottery wheel. After many attempts, I’ve decided my money is best spent supporting artists by purchasing their handcrafted pottery, having experienced firsthand just how challenging it is!

Mikaela Ashworth
Intern

I am a counseling intern from MidAmerica Nazarene University. I am in the marriage, couple, family track and am planning on going into private practice with a few friends but am open to all opportunities! I am so excited to learn and work with everyone!

Molly Smith
Intern

I am a counseling intern at MidAmerica Nazarene University and I am on the Marriage, Couples, and Family Track! I have wanted to be a counselor as far back as I can remember, so my only plan after graduation is to find a job that will allow me to fulfill that dream. Something fun about me is my favorite workout is a Zumba class!

Taylor Watts
Intern

Hi everyone! My name is Taylor Watts, and I am pursuing a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology degree at Avila University. After I graduate, I plan on opening a practice of my own. A fun fact about me is I LOOOOVE makeup. Specifically, I am a pro when it comes to eyeshadow.

Paige Schunk
Intern

My name is Paige Schunk. I am a counseling intern from MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) in the Marriage/Couple/Family Counseling track. After graduation, my current plan is to start my private practice! A fun fact about me – I am constantly singing/humming so you are likely to hear me coming before you see me. (Don’t be afraid to shush me if necessary!) To get to know more about me, ask me about the many musical instruments I play at a mediocre level or the time I have spent living overseas. Nice to meet you!

Nadia Weaver
Intern

Hello! I am a Masters in Counseling student currently attending Midamerica Nazarene University on the Clinical Mental Health track along with their Spiritual Formation emphasis. Post-graduation, I have a desire to advance my education in areas of great interest to me such as child centered counseling, trauma counseling, and implementing my Spanish language skills into future practice; I am open to wherever my wide range of passions will lead me! Aside from my love for this field, I greatly enjoy anything to do with the outdoors from walking my dog to exploring or hammocking in a good park!

Virginia Cardello
Intern

Hello! I am a counseling intern from Avila University with a strong passion for helping others through psychological support. My career goal is to work as a counselor wherever I am needed, with the ultimate goal of becoming a forensic analyst. On a personal note, I enjoy caring for animals of all kinds. I currently have a cat with no tail, a 3-pound Chihuahua, and am incubating 22 Celadon Coturnix Quail eggs. If all goes well, I look forward to welcoming new life on Christmas Day, with an estimated hatch rate of about 50%.

Toni Craig
Intern

I am a graduate student at Avila University in the M.S. Counseling Psychology program. I am looking forward to settling into my new career of helping clients. Fun fact about me: I lived in Phoenix as a kid and indoor rock-climbing was my favorite after-school activity.
