Dear Resurrection Family,
Happy Birthday! 34 years ago, today we held our first worship service. It is amazing to think of all that God has used you to accomplish since then. I’m so proud of you.
I’m writing this note as the weather forecast is showing Hurricane Milton is strengthening to a category 4 storm with what could be another record storm surge hitting the Gulf Coast of Florida. Over the weekend, I spoke with both the United Methodist Bishop of Florida and the Bishop of Western North Carolina. Both spoke of the devastation to their churches and their people.
On Sunday in worship, I asked you to join LaVon and me in making a special donation for disaster relief aimed at Western North Carolina and Florida. The funds will be distributed in grants through the United Methodist churches in hard-hit areas. We can make a difference, and as we do this through churches there, our financial aid comes through communities that will be there to provide ongoing support and care.
If you can help, please click here to give.
I also invite you to join me right now in praying for the people affected by Hurricane Helene and those who are in the path of Hurricane Milton – some are the same people who’ve already lost so much. I’m pausing to pray as I type these words.
I also want to remind you of two opportunities this week. On Wednesday night, Jenn Whitmer will be speaking at Resurrection drawing upon the Enneagram to help us think about dealing with conflict and finding joy. Join us for a community meal from 5 to 6 pm at Resurrection Leawood’s Foundry, then Jenn will speak from 6 to 8 pm. We’ll simulcast to Resurrection Downtown or you can catch it online as well. Click here to register.
Finally, I wanted to remind you about this coming weekend’s Serve Saturday as we’re spreading kindness throughout our city. We have 15 different locations, and dozens of ways you can serve, from serving meals, community clean-up, helping with a Habitat House, landscaping, working with partner schools, creating tote bags for kids in need (kids can do this, and other of our projects), and so much more. Simply click on this link and click on the opportunity you are interested in (click on the dark blue box at the bottom) and sign up.
I’m so proud of you, Resurrection. Thank you for the way you give of yourselves to bless others and spread kindness. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world…let your light so shine before others that they may see your good (noble, beautiful, lovely) works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” You do this in so many ways. The above are three more opportunities.
With love,
Adam
PS: We have a special project going on at Leawood this week assembling sets of conversation cards that we’ll be handing out this weekend in worship. If you have an extra hour or so and could help, email Cathy.Bien@cor.org.
