Thanksgiving Blessings from Pastor Adam

Blessed Thanksgiving, Resurrection!

As I write this, I’m getting ready to head out the door to make a pastoral call with someone battling stage 4 cancer, struggling for each breath. As I do, some of you from Resurrection are heading out to serve meals in the community to the homeless or elderly. When I get back home LaVon and I will be hosting our first Thanksgiving since her mom passed earlier this year. At our meal, and many of your meals, there will be some who are anxious about the year ahead and others who are hopeful.

For all of these reasons, I’m mindful of Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Paul wrote this to a church whose leaders had been arrested by the local authorities and who had recently lost several of their friends to death. In the face of harassment and sorrow he called them to give thanks. Regardless of our circumstances, there is much to be thankful for. And as we give thanks, our gratitude acts as an antidote to anxiety, sorrow and grief.

On my Thanksgiving podcast this week, I shared my experience visiting one of our members in hospice and listening as he recounted the blessings in his life; his children, old girlfriends, journeys he’s made, there was laughter that dispelled the sadness. We remembered that his life belongs to God and the reality that the worst thing is never the last thing.

As our family gathers just before the meal today, we’ll pause and give thanks for Bernice. We’ll count our blessings of God’s grace and love and having each other. We’ll focus on what we share in common, not what divides us, and we’ll “give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his steadfast love endures forever.”

Among the great blessings in my life are you, Church of the Resurrection. Thank you for allowing me to be your pastor. Happy Thanksgiving!

Adam
