Dear Resurrection Family,

This weekend is Easter!!! It’s going to be beautiful, inspiring and hope-filled! I’ll tell you more about it and some other exciting things below, but first, I want to remind you that today is Good Friday. It was on Friday of Holy Week when Jesus was tried before Pontius Pilate, beaten, sentenced to death and crucified. He died at 3 pm.

I’d like to encourage you to set your alarm for 3 pm on your phone, and at that time, to pause and pray as we mark the death of Jesus. You may want to stop to read Luke 23:26-56 where Luke recounts Jesus’ crucifixion. We’ve included it at the bottom of my eNote today. We also have a prayer guide that you can use today. Here’s the link.

Tonight from 7 to 8 pm at all of our locations and online at resurrection.church/live we’ll have our Maundy Thursday/Good Friday. We held the service last night at Leawood, and it was exceptional. It will be different at each location, but all will invite you to the Last Supper with Jesus, then through scripture, beautiful music and a short meditation you’ll experience the Last Supper and Crucifixion of Jesus. As I left last night, a woman stopped me and said, “In my 73 years as a Christian, that was the most moving thing I’ve ever experienced.” Below are a couple of pics from Leawood. Again, it is something different at each location. If you missed it last night, don’t miss it tonight!

Today we remember Christ’s suffering and death for us, but we do so as those
who know that Christ’s death does not have the final word. We will gather Saturday
and Sunday this weekend to celebrate the truth that “Christ is Risen! He is
risen indeed!” I can’t wait to share Easter worship with you!

EASTER WEEKEND IN WORSHIP: WOW!

Wednesday night and Thursday morning we recorded the TV and online services for the weekend as TV needs these early on Easter weekend. When we were finished recording traditional worship on Wednesday night all I could think was, “Wow! That was so moving!” The same was true when we recorded the modern on Thursday morning.

My message this weekend will, like the sermons this last five weeks, look at the words of Jesus – specifically what he said about his resurrection, and what he said when he appeared to his disciples on that first Easter evening. I’ll share a few stories of those who have had brushes with death; we’ll see a clip from Harry Potter that sheds light on the meaning of Easter, and we’ll hear what Jesus words to his disciples on Easter evening have to do with the story of a young man on season 20 of NBC’s The Voice.

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to church, or you have friends or family who don’t go to church, this is the perfect message for them and one I believe will inspire you as well. Here’s a link to a minute-long promo for this weekend’s services that you can post on social media or send to your friends. If you have family or friends in the Tulsa area, let them know that they can worship with Resurrection on the NBC television affiliate on Easter Sunday at 11 am or 10 pm.
We also have an Easter commercial airing invite our community to Easter worship. Here’s a link if you’d like to share it with a friend.

THANK YOU EASTER VOLUNTEERS!

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to welcome our guests to Easter worship. You never know where someone is coming from, or what they have been going through, and your welcoming presence may be how they first encounter the love of Jesus and the hope of the resurrection. We still have a few openings if you’d like to sign up and help. Here’s the link.

NO VESPERS TUESDAY, April 11

We’ll not have Vespers on Tuesday, April 11 as I’ll be out this week writing. We’ll pick up on Tuesday, April 18, live from our sanctuary where I’ll be offering a Conversation with Your Senior Pastor focused on questions about faith, the Bible, controversial issues and more. (See what is coming up after Easter below.)

JOIN ME FOR THE SEVENDAYS KINDNESS WALK APRIL 16

Nine years ago today, we held the funeral services for Reat Underwood and his
grandfather, Dr. William Corporon, who were killed at the Jewish Community
Center on Palm Sunday, 2014. Terri LaManno’s service, who was killed at Village
Shalom, was held that week as well.

In response to these acts of violence, and as a way of “overcoming evil with good”
(Romans 12:21), the Corporon family started the SevenDays organization focused
on inspiring kindness and understanding. Each year they have a Kindness Walk
and this year it will be Sunday, April 16 starting at Resurrection Leawood.
I’ll be there and hope many of you will join me and people from all over Kansas
City from a variety of faiths, races, cultures and ages.

If you like to learn more or sign up to join me on this 1.3 mile walk, here’s the

“stuff the bookmobile” by bringing gently used children’s books for
distribution to low-income students through the bookmobile and reading
programs.
Details here.

Serve Saturday: Creation Care – Also on April 15, our Serve Saturday event will have some special orchard/gardening projects in celebration of Earth Day. Select a project and sign up to serve here.

Finally, I received a special prayer request this week from Ian Lovett, a reporter at the Wall Street Journal who has written about Resurrection in the past. He asked if as Christian leaders we would join in praying for his friend and colleague Evan Gershkovich, who was wrongfully detained last week in Russia. Ian is currently reporting on Ukraine. I hope you’ll lift up Evan and Ian in your prayers as well as the people of Ukraine who need the hope of Easter more than ever.
You are hope-radiating, Easter people, Resurrection, and I’m grateful to be your pastor.

Looking forward to celebrating Easter with you!

Adam
