In this weekend’s sermon, I’m taking you to London, to Aldersgate Street where John Wesley’s heart was strangely warmed and he finally trusted in God’s grace. I’m going to take you to a Hannam Mount outside of Bristol, England, where Wesley preached to thousands of coal miners. I’ll show you the Foundry which became Methodism’s headquarters in London, and to the City Road Chapel, what came to be known as Wesley’s Chapel in London, where Wesley often preached when in London. We’ll see the bedroom where Wesley died and end the sermon at his grave.
You may think, “Why do I care about John Wesley, the 19th-century founder of Methodism?” I don’t know that you need to care about him except insofar as he was a follower of Jesus who championed an approach to the gospel that has spoken to tens of millions of people over the last three hundred years. That approach has shaped who we are at Resurrection.  I think you’ll find this sermon interesting and inspiring and that it will help you to know who we are and why we do what we do. Whether you’re a life-long Methodist or just exploring the faith, I hope you’ll join us. And again, if you are travelling, join us online, and if you are in KC and can’t make it to worship, you can also join us on TV. Click here for all the ways you can join us for worship this weekend.

Did you know that Isaac Cates, part of our worship staff, is known across the world for his work in gospel music? He’s an exceptional talent and he’s once more brought together an amazing group of gospel musicians and singers for the Affirmations Night of Worship next Saturday night, September 6 at 6:30 pm in the Leawood sanctuary. You don’t want to miss this. It’s free, family-friendly (I took Stella last time and she loved it!), and it features Grammy-nominated special guest Oleta Adams and award-winning vocalist Callie Day. You won’t want to miss this amazing event!
Here’s a link to what you will experience. Plan now to be a part of this very special event.

Summer vacations wrap up this weekend, but this is the perfect time to begin preparing for a Global Serve Trip in 2026. Registration is now open. Whether building relationships and serving communities in Honduras and Costa Rica, or working alongside our partners, making a difference in Malawi and Uganda, these mission trips offer meaningful ways to share God’s love as the hands and feet of Jesus while serving others in our community and around the world. We will have a special live Global Missions event at Resurrection Leawood on October 15 at 6:30 pm in the Foundry. Our Mission Team will be there to tell you more about the trips, share information about our mission partners around the world, and answer any questions you may have.
Here’s the link for more information.

Are you at that stage of life transition when you find yourself asking “What’s Next?” Find Your Purpose is an event for people who want to explore a deeper sense of purpose, meaning and connection as they move into new seasons of life in the hopes of making their next season the best season of life. Hosted at Resurrection Leawood and Online on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 8 am – 1 pm CST, the workshop offers insights on how to define who you are after life transitions and guidance to find your purpose as you approach and enter retirement.
You’ll have the opportunity to hear from inspiring speakers, including Bishop Will Willimon who served as the dean of Duke Chapel and professor of Christian ministry at Duke University for 20 years. He returned to Duke after serving as the bishop of the North Alabama Conference from 2004 to 2012. He has taught in Germany, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia in various seminaries. He is a trustee of Wofford College, Emory University, and serves on the Dean’s Committee of Yale Divinity School. He is the author of 70 books, and more than a million copies of his books have been sold. His articles have appeared in many publications including Theology Today, Interpretation, Liturgy, and Christianity Today. He is editor-at-large for The Christian Century.
I consider Bishop Willimon a friend and mentor, and I’m excited that he will be at Resurrection. He will also be sharing the message on Sept. 28. Register now and don’t miss this exciting opportunity to explore “what’s next?” for you.
MAKING SENSE OF FAITH PODCAST: BIG DREAMS? EXPECT CRITICISM
My podcast this week was originally filmed for this weekend’s sermon but had to be cut for time. I filmed it with our young adults from Resurrection at the New Room in Bristol, England, where I unpacked some timeless lessons about for John Wesley about pursuing big dreams, handling criticism, and staying true to your calling even when others push back. This isn’t just a history lesson; it’s a roadmap for anyone wrestling with whether to take bold steps for something they believe in. You can listen to or watch and share it with friends by clicking here.
DON’T FORGET TO ORDER YOUR ANNIVERSARY T-SHIRT!
If you’d like to order one of our 35th anniversary t-shirts, make sure you get your order in by Sunday, Sept. 7. T-shirts are $13, and you can order online here and pick them up at the Resurrection location closest to you Sept. 21, or if you would prefer, you can order directly from our vendor here and have shirts shipped directly to your home (with additional shipping and processing fees). We have learned that these eco-friendly shirts may run a little smaller, and the women’s sizes are more fitted, so check the size guide, and you may want to order a size larger.
THANK YOU, BLOOD DONORS!
As we head into the Labor Day weekend, our community is grateful to all of you who stepped up to donate blood and replenish inventory over the last two weeks. Altogether Resurrection collected 892 life-saving pints of blood which could potentially help more than 2,500 people. Thank you for this and the many ways you care for our community!
Enjoy your Labor Day weekend!
In Christ’s Love,
Adam
