July 7, 2023
Dear Resurrection Family,
I’m excited to be back in the pulpit this weekend as we kick off our 2023 Summer Revival! In our spiritual life, as well as in many other parts of our lives, vitality, passion, and commitment can wane. This is true in friendships and marriages; it is true when it comes to our work or other interests. When we forget why we’re doing what we’re doing, or we give and give but don’t take the time to renew and replenish, we can experience burnout, or become lackadaisical or apathetic in our vocation, our relationships, and in our spiritual life. The writer of the Book of Revelation noted that the Christians at Ephesus had “lost your first love,” and those in Laodicea had become “lukewarm.” Both were in need of revival.
Over the next three weeks, I’ll be leading you in a study of Jesus at the Lake. Some of the most loved stories in the gospels happen in and around the Sea of Galilee. From the gospels, it is clear that Jesus loved the lake. It is mentioned 50 times and most of Jesus’ public ministry was spent in and around the lake. As we do this, I’ll be sharing footage and video from the Holy Land, but also sharing some of my experiences around the Lake of the Ozarks that tie into the stories of Jesus at the Lake. You can see some of the footage of both the Sea of Galilee and the Lake of the Ozarks and catch a preview of where we’re headed during these three weeks in this two-minute video, click here to take a look!
I’d like to invite you to pause to do one thing right now. Would you stop to pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you, through us, and in this series? Revival is the Holy Spirit’s work and I’m praying that the Holy Spirit will be powerfully present in the midst of our worship – to renew you, and me and all who worship with us these next few weeks!
This weekend we’ll kick off Jesus at the Lake with the story of his stepping into Simon Peter’s boat to preach to the crowds on the shoreline. When he was finished, he asked Peter to go out into the deep water to drop his nets – this, after Peter had fished all night and caught nothing. Peter miraculously caught a huge number of fish. After this, Jesus said to him, “Come follow me and you will fish for people.” Peter left everything (as did Andrew, James and John) in order to follow Jesus.
In the message, l’ll take you to the Sea of Galilee, and to the Lake of the Ozarks. We’ll learn something about fishing. We’ll meet Bob, my neighbor at the lake, who will tell us about fishermen. And we’ll end by remembering that Jesus didn’t just call Peter, James and John, he’s also calling you!
I hope you’ll join us for worship this weekend! If you’re out of town, please join us online. Here’s the link: resurrection.church/worship.
