Dear Resurrection Family,

Tomorrow, across all of our locations, we’ve got our Egg-Venture Easter Egg Hunt! These are fun, free events for children and their families, featuring egg hunts, crafts, activities for kids, and more. Invite your kids, grandkids, and neighbors. I’ll be at Leawood for the kick-off at 10 am. We plan for the unpredictable spring weather, and this year it may be chilly, but know that a large portion of our activities will be inside our buildings. Join us from 10 am to Noon at Leawood, Downtown, Overland Park, Brookside and Lee’s Summit. From 2 to 4 pm at West, Blue Springs and Spring Hill. And after 10 am worship on Sunday at Liberty.

Then on Sunday, I’m looking forward to sharing the message in worship as we turn to the final hours of Jesus life and observe Passion Sunday.

THIS WEEKEND IN WORSHIP – JESUS’ ARREST, TRIAL AND CRUCIFIXION

Traditionally, in the church and at Resurrection, the Sunday before Easter is both Palm Sunday and Passion Sunday. But this year, it is only Passion Sunday since we observed Palm Sunday at the beginning of Lent. Please bring your Bible with you to church, as I’ll walk you through Matthew 26:36 and through all of Matthew 27.

I’ll pick up where Pastor Scott left off last week, with Judas’ betrayal of Jesus with a kiss – we’ll share the closing scene from season five of The Chosen – very powerful. Then we’ll consider Peter’s denial of Jesus, the religious leaders’ trial by night, Pontius Pilate’s trial on Friday morning, and the crowd’s call for Jesus to be crucified. We’ll recount the soldiers’ mocking of Jesus, and then end with Christ’s crucifixion. We’ll close the service as we often do on Passion Sunday, building the cross, extinguishing the Christ candle, and leaving in silence. Don’t miss worship this weekend and invite a friend.

If you have children in Resurrection Kids this Sunday, make sure you get the special resource we are sharing with parents about how to talk with your children about Good Friday and Easter this weekend. It includes some tips for age-appropriate conversations, as well as a hands-on activity to share the story of Jesus at home. Resurrection wants to equip you and partner with you in your child’s faith journey. You can also download this handout here.

EASTER WORSHIP TIMES AND LOCATIONS

Who do you know who needs this message of hope? I want to encourage you not just to invite someone, but to invite them to come to worship with you. Sometimes walking into an unfamiliar place with larger-than-usual crowds can be intimidating; coming with a friend can ease that concern. This weekend in worship, we’ll have a handout with all the Easter times and locations that you can share with your friends. You can also share the worship times and locations list online at resurrection.church/Easter, as well as our Easter television spot. Click HERE to see and share the TV spot.

As we expect larger-than-usual crowds, we’ve added some service times. There will be plenty of seats at our sunrise 7 am services; this is a special time to share the Easter experiences of the women who were the first to discover the empty grave. For families, our interactive Easter services on Saturday will feature the same Easter message, along with special elements to engage your children. We will also have 5 pm Saturday evening services at several locations. Childcare for pre-K and under is available at all services except the 7 am. RESURRECTION TRIP EXPLORES HISTORY TO LEARN AND BUILD BRIDGES

Last week, Pastors Joshua Clough and Robert Johnson led a powerful two-day trip to Tulsa and Pawhuska, Oklahoma, where congregants learned about the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 and visited the Osage Nation. The group engaged in challenging conversations about the history of racism, injustice, and violence in our nation. As Joshua shared: “When you hear the story of an entire community violently destroyed, like the Greenwood District of Tulsa, the reality weighs heavily. But also, we heard about resilience and rebuilding and hope. We reflected on how people of faith can listen, learn, and live in ways that build bridges across difference, reflecting the light and love of Christ.” I’m so grateful these trips were offered and look forward to participating in one of these myself in the future. If you are interested in a 2027 trip, you can sign up here. Below are a couple of photos of the group (click to enlarge):

INVITATION TO A UNITY SEDER

During his final week, Jesus celebrated the Passover meal with his disciples. This “Seder” meal is a traditional Jewish ritual feast commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. Our friends at the Jewish Community Relations Bureau have invited us to join them for a Unity Seder on Monday, April 27, at 5:30 pm. This event brings Christians, Muslims and Jews together. I’m planning to participate and would love for some of you to join me. If you are interested, you can register here.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE LEAWOOD PRAYER WALK?

I spent time this week walking our Leawood Outdoor Prayer Walk – Our Stations of the Life of Jesus – with a group of college students this week. Located to the south of the Leawood sanctuary, between the parking lots, this prayer walk was designed to be roughly the distance Jesus carried his cross on Good Friday. Catholics have the “Stations of the Cross” – we’ve drawn inspiration from them, but our prayer walk follows major events from the entire life of Jesus. There is local art, and quiet places for reflection. Everyone is welcome, and we have devotional guides to help you as you pray and retrace Jesus’ life. On Good Friday, join the indoor prayer vigil in the Wesley Chapel, and if the weather is nice, you can pick up the devotional guide from a box near the first station of the prayer walk. You can see the various stations of the prayer walk on its website here.

Resurrection, I look forward, every year, to this coming week, starting with the Egg-Venture, and moving through Holy Week. It is the most important and meaningful week of the year for Christians. Don’t miss it!

With love,

Adam
