Dear Resurrection Family,
We have a couple of very exciting weekends coming up as we prepare to celebrate Easter. In addition, this weekend I’m going to take you to Egypt in order to understand the significance of Jesus’ death on the cross as we continue in our series, Why Did Jesus Have to Die?
Each weekend this Lent we’re focusing on the question, Why Did Jesus Have to Die? This weekend we’ll turn to the words of Jesus himself about his impending death, as he spoke of his death as “a ransom for many” and his blood as the “blood of the new covenant.”
As part of the sermon, I’ll take you to the Nile River delta and also to sunrise on Mt. Sinai in Egypt as we seek to understand the crucifixion. You’ll also hear from a rabbi on the significance of the Passover Seder, and I’ll share with you a bit of an interview I did this week with my Uncle Glenn, who spent nine years in federal prisons for selling heroin, and how Christ’s death ransomed him from the life he’d lived.
Bring a notepad and pen to take notes during the sermon. These are deep and complex ideas, I think taking notes will help you remember them and be better able to discuss them later. Invite a friend to join you for worship this weekend. Here’s the sermon series promo for you to share on social media.
As we prepare to launch our new Resurrection Lee’s Summit location on Palm Sunday, April 13, we have one more preview service this Sunday. This week we’ll be offering children’s programing during worship. Worship begins at 10 am at The Pavilion at John Knox Village (520 NW Murray Rd., Lee’s Summit, MO 64081). If you have friends and family in Lee’s Summit, invite them to join you on Sunday. You can learn more about Resurrection Lee’s Summit and how to get connected here.
Our aim is to have these projects completely paid for before we move into them. We’ll fund the stained-glass window as we did the Leawood sanctuary window – with special gifts from our members in honor or memory of loved ones. We also have portions of the projects that are currently needing funding. I’m meeting this Monday night with new members who joined since our 2023 Generation to Generation capital campaign to invite them to help. If you were not able to participate in the Generation to Generation campaign in 2023, I’d love you to join me Monday night so that you might join in this effort specifically with help for liturgical furnishings, playground equipment, audio visual equipment, and the stained-glass window.
I’m having supper with our new members at 6 pm, but anyone is welcome as we begin our tour at 6:30 pm in the current Student Center (Building C) where I’ll share the plans for renovating that space to meet the needs of current and future teens. Then we’ll move to the Wesley Chapel to see how it will be converted to become a welcoming counseling and care center. We’ll head outside to the future playground and recreation area and then we’ll conclude by going to the site of our new chapel and seeing the plans for this space. You’ll be the first to see panes of the stained-glass window that just arrived from the artist.
Commitment Weekend: In worship, for those who are helping fund the stained-glass window and/or any new commitments to the Generation to Generation Capital Campaign, we’ll turn in our commitments.
Mobile Dental Clinic on Display: After the groundbreaking, you’ll have the opportunity to see the Swope Health Mobile Dental Clinic on site. The mobile dental clinic was purchased and outfitted by your generous gifts to our 2023 Candlelight Christmas Eve offering. It’s has taken over a year to build, but we are so excited that it’s ready to start serving children in our community. This second mobile clinic will allow Swope Health to double their efforts to help meet the overwhelming need for children’s dental care in our community. Supporting Swope Health’s mission to provide affordable, accessible, and quality medical and dental care is one way Resurrection is living into our vision of “closing the opportunity gaps” and providing a future with hope for all children. I am so proud of your commitment and your generosity! Here are photos of the two sides of the mobile clinic that will be here April 6.
I’m mixing things up on my podcast, Making Sense of Faith. Next week I’ve got a great interview with my uncle, Glenn Miller, who speaks about his life story – the loss of his mother to suicide when he was 14 (details I’d not heard before), his nine years in prison for selling heroin, and his conversion to Christ here at Resurrection. But this week’s podcast is a 15-minute discussion of the question, “Does every happen for a reason?” and the question of God and suffering. I think you will find it helpful, though familiar ground if you are a long-time member of Resurrection. But the real reason I’d like you to listen to it is that you might know someone for whom it would be helpful. To listen or watch click here.
