Daily Scripture

Romans 13:8-10

8 Don’t be in debt to anyone, except for the obligation to love each other. Whoever loves another person has fulfilled the Law. 9 The commandments, Don’t commit adultery, don’t murder, don’t steal, don’t desire what others have [Exodus 20:13-15, 17; Deuteronomy 5:17-19, 21] and any other commandments, are all summed up in one word: You must love your neighbor as yourself [Leviticus 19:18]. 10 Love doesn’t do anything wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is what fulfills the Law.

Daily Reflection & Prayer

Paul sent this letter to Roman house churches (there were no big cathedrals in his day). Some were mainly Jewish; others mostly Gentile. Their standards of “righteousness” varied (cf. Romans 14:1-15:13). Paul said the purpose of God’s law or rules is to help us love, and John Wesley agreed. He wrote, “To love one another – An eternal debt, which can never be sufficiently discharged; but yet if this be rightly performed, it discharges all the rest.” *

  • Paul spoke to differences over minor issues (that seemed major to those who felt strongly about them). How do you think some of them might have initially reacted to the idea that “Whoever loves another person has fulfilled the Law”? Do you know anyone who is genuinely loving, but in some parts of life acts in ways that you think miss the mark? Do you believe Paul was right, or was he too soft on “law breakers”?
  • How might ugly religious conflicts (e.g. the Salem witch trials, the Inquisition, conflicts over the state religion in Wesley’s day) have been different if Christians had always aimed to fulfill the law by loving? How can you stand for truths that matter to you without acting in unloving ways toward those who disagree? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you grow in the inner qualities (that may not come naturally) that help you live out the law of love.
Prayer

Lord Jesus, “love is what fulfills the Law” sometimes feels too easy to me. Until, that is, I try to do it—then I realize how high and hard a standard that is. Teach me how to love the way that you love. Amen.

In today’s Scripture, Paul brings up an intriguing idea–the only debt we should owe is to love one another. What if God created an elaborate system to track these “debts?” My favorite disciple, Thomas, would probably have a few questions. It might go like this:

Good Morning! Thanks for calling Eternal Equities–God’s Credit Union. My name is Bill Fold. Who am I helping today?

Welcome Thomas! You saw one of our brochures that Paul has been leaving about & you have some questions about our Credit Score procedures? That’s why we’re here. God’s Credit Union is quite different from your typical banks.

Excuse me for a moment. The Pharaoh’s daughter just came up to our counter. What is it now, Bithia? That’s right. You are allowed to keep all prophets you withdraw from the River Bank.

Okay, Thomas, I’m back. Let me pull up your account. I see you are already a member. Once you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord & Savior you are automatically enrolled.

So, how’d we get started? Super question. As you know, everyone is saved by faith & faith alone. But after a believer comes to faith, they always ask, “What now?” Well, this is when the community of faith comes together to develop the Kingdom of God on earth like it is in heaven. The most effective way to get this started is to practice acts of love. So, we established Eternal Equities to track these “love payments” to see how we are progressing.

Hang on, Thomas. Peter has a question. Yes, Peter? No, technically all the fish that you & Andrew catch are taxable. That is considered your net income. You’re welcome.

I’m back. How does it work? We are the inverse of the world’s banks. Here we start each day by making a deposit of 10 Acts of Love into every believer’s account. Our objective is for each believer to drain their account throughout the day. Ironically, receiving an overdraft notice causes quite the celebration around here.

What kind of acts are we talking about? Well, for example, we had a super-busy week last month during Vacation Bible Camp. You had both kids & adults happily sharing supplies, you had doors being open for others, strangers greeting each other with smiles, donations to wonderful missions, kids teaming up together making sure no one was left out, &, even though the adults were physically exhausted, they were walking out of the church with a bounce in their step. Goodness, what a week that was! Everyone around here was wiped out.

Please hold, Thomas. Good morning, Noah. That is correct. While everyone else is in liquidation, God is allowing you to float your stock. Yes, it is the ultimate “Rainy-Day Fund.” Enjoy your cruise.

Yes, Thomas, you’re right. Our Credit Union is the opposite of what you would expect. There is a great deal of celebrating if you have an account sent to the Collection Agency. Those accounts are making God’s Kingdom a reality through each one of their acts of love. Ironically, the more you “spend” in acts of love, the richer you get. No, not just in the afterlife–your everyday life becomes overflowing with joy & peace. These folks turn out to be the wealthiest people on earth.

What’s my advice? Well, Thomas, go ahead & be generous! Be extravagant! Tip with grace, give out handfuls of joy, make large payments of patience, & try to drain your account every day. I’ll tell you this. There’s nothing better than receiving an I.O.U. from God–THAT is the ultimate, “Well done, good & faithful servant.”

Anything else, Thomas? How’d I get my name? Let’s just say that I have a Dad with a sense of humor & I caught the folks off-guard when I was born in a Dollar General store. Have a nice day!
