whose mother was Tamar.
Perez was the father of Hezron.

Amminadab was the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5 Salmon was the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab.
Boaz was the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth.
Obed was the father of Jesse.
6 Jesse was the father of David the king.
David was the father of Solomon,
whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.

Daily Reflection & Prayer

In today’s passage, Matthew is connecting Jesus to King David to demonstrate that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah. This was important because Israel had been waiting centuries for the one who would set them free from oppression. They had been living in a perpetual state of hope that the “Anointed One” would one day come.
This is the sense of anticipation and longing that we bring today as we begin this season of Advent. “Hope” is the theme for the first Sunday of Advent.
I encourage you to partake in this prayer practice today as a way of engaging in this season of Advent:
Pray, “Wonderful and holy God, fill me with your hope in this season.”
Look back over your experience of 2024 and consider these questions:
  1. What was one good thing you hoped for in 2024 that was fulfilled for you?
  2. What was one good thing you hoped for in 2024 that was NOT fulfilled for you?
  3. What is one good thing you hope will come to pass in 2025?
    Finish with this prayer:
Prayer
God, please fill me with your joy and peace as I wait.
I thank you for [the thing that was fulfilled in 2024] and am grateful for your presence in my life.
I present [the thing that was not fulfilled in 2024] to you and ask for grace and that you fill me with hope as I trust in you.
As I look to this next year, I have hope for [the thing you hope will be fulfilled in 2025] because you are the God of Hope.
This waiting helps me understand how the people of Israel felt waiting for Jesus to come.
Help me to never give up and to always have hope in you.
I know that regardless of any outcome or circumstance, you are always with me.
I am never alone.
Thank you.
In your powerful name, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer.
Amen.
