Malawi III: November 7-19, 2024

This morning, eleven members of the Resurrection Serve team (Russ & Lori, Natalie & Eric, Bill & Monica, Gail, Nancy, Sara, Stephanie and Jeremy) left KC and headed out to Malawi. It was a very early morning for the team, who set out with eleven large suitcases full of childrens books, destined for the new library in Madisi, Dowa. This new library is a project of Resurrection’s Malawian partners at Opulence, and we will be spending quite a bit of time with the Opulence crew, learning about their projects and supporting them however we can.

The total number of books we are lugging across an ocean, a continent, an equator and eight time zones is unknown, but we do know we are taking about 480lbs of new and gently books & games, which were obtained through the resourceful hunting of various members of the group. We are also supplying the library with three new laptops to be used for educational and administrative purposes.

Fun fact: the team members all agreed to use their large, checked suitcases to transport as many books as possible. This sacrifice has necessitated the use of carry-on bags and backpacks for personal items (you know, things like clean clothes and deodorant). Maybe I can give an assessment of our collective odoreferousness upon our return.

Sheree was kind enough to pray over us before we geared up to get through security and hop on the first leg of the journey to Newark, where we got to enjoy the comforts of the United Club, also courtesy of Sheree! A short eleven hour layover wedged itself between the flight from KC to Newark and the big kahuna…the 14 hour flight to Johannesburg, South Africa. We’ll have an overnight in Johannesburg and then will finish the long trip to Lilongwe, Malawi on Saturday, November 9th.
Stay tuned for more!
