We’ve had one full day in Poland!
Upon arrival late afternoon on Saturday, after getting settled and eating a fabulous meal, we headed to Old Town Krakow to shake out our legs. Being a Saturday night, the streets were filled with families, the squares filled with laughter and chatter, and the evening filled with a gentle breeze. It was a relaxing way to start our time here.
Sunday morning we headed to Tarnow, a 1.5 hour drive from Krakow where our host, Pastor Adrian, leads his church. It was beautiful listening everyone sing, “Open the Eyes of my Heart, Lord” in Polish and English at the same time. As the service came to a close, our young adults were invited to lead us all in one last song (they chose “Reckless Love”) and it was fun when quite a few of the Polish congregants knew the words and sang along!
Every week the Krakow UMC ends their worship with a social time and they invited us to join them. It was great watching everyone connecting with each other – listening, learning, and sharing. Quite a few people in the church have moved from Ukraine to Poland in the past 2 years due to the war. We considered it an honor when they shared their story with us.
Pastor Adrian took us on a tour of Tarnow. The tree sculpture (pictured) is place in a park where a synagogue was destroyed. It’s called the Tree of Justice and is currently being installed. Names of all of the families from Tarnow that hid a Jewish person/family are being recognized with their name on a plate of this tree. At night, the names shine light outwards. They are being honored for shining light during the darkness of WW2.
At the end of the day today, Megan asked us what we learned today:
We are ending our day late, but we are ending it with gratitude, thankfulness, and filled hearts.
