Dear Resurrection Family,

As you read this, I’m on my way back from the Great Plains Annual Conference in Kearney, Nebraska (the Great Plains Annual Conference is made up of the 700+ United Methodist Churches in Kansas and Nebraska). More on the annual conference below. This weekend will be my final sermon in our series on the Sermon on the Mount and the last sermon I’ll preach until August, after the primary. I’ll be stepping back from most of my daily responsibilities to focus on the campaign.

THIS WEEKEND IN WORSHIP: JESUS’ FINAL WORDS OF THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT… AND A FEW FINAL WORDS OF MY OWN

We’ll conclude our series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount by turning to Matthew 7:13-27 where Jesus gives his final charge to his disciples and to us. These words in Matthew 7 are powerful and convicting. Near the end of the sermon, I’ll share with you a final charge I have for you as I prepare to step away from preaching until late August. Don’t miss it, and invite your friends to join you at one of our services that you can find here.

TWO RESURRECTION LEADERS BEING ORDAINED TOMORROW

As I mentioned above, the Great Plains Annual Conference is currently taking place in Kearney, Nebraska. This gathering is called the Annual Conference because it meets annually as delegates conduct church business, vote on legislation and a budget, worship, study, fellowship, and celebrate ministry. On Saturday, new clergy will be ordained. Resurrection’s Pastor Blake Thomas will be ordained an elder, and Resurrection member and Topeka School Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Anderson will be ordained a Deacon. Others being ordained who have a Resurrection connection are Josh Seifert as an Elder and Stephen Sim as a Provisional Elder. Josh served as a Resurrection Fellow, and Stephen was a former Resurrection member. Below is a picture of most of our delegates at supper last night, and a picture with Blake and Dr. Anderson.

CELEBRATING PASTOR PENNY ELLWOOD’S RETIREMENT

This month, we are celebrating the legacy of love and leadership that Pastor Penny Ellwood, Location Pastor of Resurrection Blue Springs, leaves us as she retires. Penny joined Resurrection as a Care Pastor in 2009, and when we launched Resurrection Blue Springs in 2010, she became their pastor. I am so grateful for Penny and the way she has led a congregation that has consistently welcomed new members and grown in their faith while engaging and serving in the Blue Springs community. If you would like to drop Pastor Penny a note of appreciation or share a special memory, you can email Penny.Ellwood@Resurrection.church or mail it to Resurrection Blue Springs, 601 NE Jefferson St., Blue Springs, MO 64014. Resurrection Blue Springs will honor Penny with a reception in the lobby after each worship service on June 7.

ADAM KISLER NAMED RESURRECTION BLUE SPRINGS LOCATION PASTOR

Pastor Adam Kisler, who has been serving as Local Missions Engagement Director at Resurrection Downtown has been appointed to be Location Pastor at Resurrection Blue Springs.

TWO RESURRECTION SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS COMING UP: SUMMER MAKEOVER AND RUMMAGE SALE

Summer is a great time to get connected at Resurrection and we have two annual events coming up where you get to know others in the church and make a difference in our community.
  • Our Community Makeover project this year is at The Hub, a community gathering place in the Argentine neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, providing a community market, clothing pantry, community garden and a commercial kitchen. From June 3 – 10, we’ll help refresh and strengthen the spaces that make it all possible. You can get signed up here to join us to have fun working alongside other Resurrection friends and be part of something really special this summer.
  • Our annual Resurrection Rummage Sale hosted by United Women of Faith is a great community event with proceeds supporting families living in poverty in Kansas City. Volunteers are needed to serve in a variety of ways June 7 – 13. You can donate items for the sale June 7-10 (Check the website for what can be donated.) Then help invite the community and shop when the Rummage Sale opens June 11 – 13. All the details are here.

As I prepare to be away from you for a few months, I want to let you know the joy I have of serving as your pastor for these first 36 years. I love you, Resurrection. When I announced that I was running for the U.S. Senate, I did so because I felt decisions made in Washington did not always reflect the values I hold dear, values I’ve preached, taught, and sought to live.
With my 36 years here at the church, people will find something I said they don’t like or something a ministry did that they disagreed with, and they will work hard to distort or twist it for their own gain. But here’s what I do know. You are a great church, and your ministry speaks volumes about kindness, grace and love. You are a bright light, and I am enjoying telling everyone I meet across the state about the incredible impact we’ve had so far, and I know we’re just beginning. I’m proud of you.

While this weekend will be my last to preach for a while, and I’ll be stepping away to campaign, I’ll still be around for key events and serving where needed. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to experiencing the leadership and preaching of our great pastoral team and guest preachers in the coming months. While I’m away, you’ll be able to follow me and my travels from my social media pages.

Looking forward to seeing you in worship this weekend!

In Christ’s love,

Adam
