As we enter the sacred season of Lent, we are invited to slow down, quiet our hearts, and turn our attention toward God. The Lenten concert series offers a prayerful space for reflection, repentance, and renewal as we remember Christ’s journey to the cross.

Issac Cates

Isaac is the Music Outreach Director at Church of the Resurrection. A Kansas City native, he has been playing piano and singing for over 30 years and studied Piano, Voice, and Choral Conducting at the UMKC Conservatory of Music. A songwriter, clinician, and music missionary, his music has been sung in congregations worldwide and performed by ensembles including the Boston Pops and the Portland and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras. He founded the gospel group called Ordained, One AcCORd both and leads Affirmations: A Night of Worship, a growing worship movement in Kansas City bringing together voices from across the country and beyond.

Quintessential Woodwind Quintet

The Quintessential Woodwind Quintet has been playing together since 2020. They all share a love of music that they have had since their high school years, and enjoy sharing that love with other people through their performances.

These wonderful musicians can be heard throughout the metro area, playing in local community bands and orchestras, as well as local music theater organizations, including the Leawood Stage Company and The White Theater series at the Jewish Community Center.

Members include: Ashly Cipher (clarinet), Lisa England (bassoon), Paul Jolley (French Horn), Jerilyn Main (flute), and Amy Schwartz (oboe/English horn).

Resurrection Brass Quinet and Organ

The Resurrection Brass Quintet is comprised of members from the Resurrection Orchestra, which leads the Sunday traditional worship service at 11:00am.

The Resurrection Orchestra is also an integral part of the worship experience on Sundays, not to mention the annual Christmas at Resurrection performances and Easter Sunday services. Members of the Resurrection Brass Quintet have been performing in the orchestra for many years, in addition to local community bands and wind ensembles.

The performers are: John Burgess (trumpet), Kevin Ross (trumpet), Paul Jolley (French Horn), Matt Bond (trombone), and Gary Samples (tuba).

Resurrection String Trio

Evan Flynn
Violinist Evan Flynn is an established collaborative artist, chamber musician, and educator. She is the prizewinner of multiple MTNA chamber music competitions and has performed extensively throughout the Midwest and Germany, notably with the Illinois Symphony, Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, and Eutiner Festspiele Orchester.

Ms. Flynn has received training from renowned artists including the Pacifica Quartet, Miami Quartet, Parker Quartet, Arianna Quartet, Jupiter Quartet, Fry Street Quartet, and Sunho Kim, among others. She has participated in festivals as a performer including Midwest Young Artists, Madeline Island Chamber Music, and UW-Madison Summer Music.  Ms. Flynn holds Master of Music degrees in Music Theory and Performance from the University of Kansas. Her academic interests include synesthesia-based audio and visual arts and post-tonal theory. She maintains a private studio in Lawrence and is the owner of Violetta Strings Chamber Music. This is her second season performing as concertmaster of the Resurrection Orchestra.  

Andrew Bonci:
Andrew S Bonci Jr was born and raised in the Kansas City Metro Area and attended Shawnee Mission North High School where he began his musical journey with viola and guitar in the school orchestra and jazz ensemble. He holds two degrees from the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance; a Bachelor of Arts in Music (2018) and a Master’s of Music in Viola Performance (2021). During his time at the Conservatory he was under the tutelage of Scott Lee, but also had the opportunity to study with such professors as Joe Genualdi, Benny Kim, and Carter Enyart. As as violist, Andrew performs in wedding quartets, chamber and symphonic orchestras, and also serves as a church orchestra sectional leader. In addition to these regular posts Andrew has been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to play viola in on-stage orchestras with bands and touring acts coming through the Kansas City and St Louis area. These bands/artists include Evanescence (2017/2018), Lindsey Sterling (2018), The Hanson Brothers (2018), and The Eagles (2022).

Larry Hernandez:
Larry Hernandez started playing cello at the age of 9 through his elementary school’s strings program. He earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Cello Performance from the UMKC Conservatory, studying under Michael Mermagen. Other influential teachers of his include Carter Enyeart, Alexander East, Amir Eldan, and Amit Peled. Larry has performed throughout the United States at various festivals such as Hunter International Music Festival in New York, Innsbrook Music Festival in St. Louis, Frostburg Music Academy in Maryland, and the Academie Musique Strings Workshop in Temple, Texas.

Larry plays regularly with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Saint Joseph Symphony. He is the former cellist of the UMKC Graduate Fellowship String Quartet. He performed Saint-Saën’s “The Swan” as a soloist at Kauffman Center’s Helzberg Hall. He has performed in masterclasses for artists Hans Jørgen Jensen, David Finkel & Wu Han, Michael Stern, Zlatomir Fung, Michael Mermagen, and Amit Peled. Larry is proud to be a Teaching Artist at Harmony Project-Kansas City, a non-profit music program for underserved children in Kansas City, Missouri. He also is a mentor for the Àkójọpọ̀ Music Foundation, a Chicago based non-profit that provides musical resources for African classical musicians in the U.S. and abroad.

Spirituals on Keyboards

Spirituals on Keyboards will include organ solos, organ/piano duets, a piano duet, and one piece that uses the inside of the piano to produce sound effects. Narration will describe the history of spirituals as a Christian music genre and the context behind the familiar spirituals being performed.

Kelly Sanford
Kelly Sanford has served the Traditional Music ministry at the Leawood location for 20+ years. He accompanies the adult choir and Voices of Resurrection, and is a regular fixture during Sunday morning services and a variety of other seasonal music events throughout the year. 

Ray Smith:
Ray Smith has served as a church organist/pianist for over 45 years, including 12 years as the organist/accompanist for the 7:30am Wesley Chapel service at the Resurrection-Leawood location. He is currently the rehearsal pianist for the Resurrection Orchestra and occasionally plays organ at the south Kansas City location of Colonial Presbyterian Church, where he served for 15 years.  Ray has been a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists since 2010.

 Rev. Cheryl Jefferson Bell:
Cheryl Jefferson Bell is an ordained Elder in the Great Plains Conference of The United Methodist Church. Formally an Electrical Engineer for 10 years, she received her calling to fulltime ministry in 1990 while serving as an active member of her home church, Wichita Saint Mark UMC.  Cheryl is the 4th generation of her family to be part of what is the UMC. 

Education: Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics; Bachelor of Electrical Engineering; and Master of Divinity.  

She has served as either the first African American and/or female in her Kansas appointments as associate pastor, senior pastor, executive minister of a social service organization, and 8 years as a DS (district superintendent). Cheryl has served at the General/Jurisdictional level of the denomination for over 25 years. 

She has been on staff for 13 years and currently serves as Pastor of Community Justice at Resurrection.

Brookside Concert Series

Trevor Good, Organist

Trevor Good is an undergraduate student at the University of Kansas, pursuing organ performance with Dr. James Higdon. He serves as organist at Resurrection Brookside in Kansas City, MO and as student organ scholar at the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center in Lawrence, KS. Good has been named an American Guild of Organists Rising Star and has won prizes in several organ competitions, such as the Fort Wayne National Organ Playing Competition and the ILC Organ Scholar Competition in Evanston, IL. In addition to regular performances stateside, he has participated in masterclasses and performed in France and the Netherlands. Good’s former teachers include Dr. Grigory Frederick Guzasky and Dale Rogers.

Resurrection Brass Choir

The Resurrection Brass Choir is comprised of members of the trumpet, horn, and low brass sections of the Resurrection Orchestra. The Resurrection Orchestra leads worship for the traditional services at the Resurrection Leawood location, beginning in mid-August and continuing through the month of June. They are also an integral part of the annual Christmas at Resurrection performances. Some of the Resurrection Brass Choir members perform with Kansas City area wind ensembles and community orchestras, as well as teach at the collegiate level and perform with professional symphony orchestras.

Chaconne String Quartet

The Chaconne String Quartet was formed in the early 2000’s. Stephanie Hill formed the group with fellow William Jewell College music alumni, Rebecca Clayton and Andra Lewin. Dana Woolard joined the group shortly after another cellist moved. The quartet plays together regularly for weddings and events throughout the Kansas City area. Mrs. Hill, Ms. Lewin, and Ms. Woolard also perform together in the Liberty Symphony Orchestra and Mrs. Clayton performs with the Northland Symphony Orchestra. All four members teach music in some capacity in the area.
