Resurrection Hunger Ministry

Backpacks For Hunger

Feeding Bodies. Fueling Futures.

At Resurrection’s partner schools, 75–100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch—meaning their access to consistent nutrition often ends when the school week does. For many of these children, weekends bring uncertainty about when and what they’ll eat next.

That’s where Backpacks for Hunger steps in.

Each week, we send home over 1,500 bags of nutritious, easy-to-prepare food, helping ensure students return to school on Monday ready to learn—not distracted by hunger. These backpacks offer more than just snacks—they provide stability, dignity, and a reminder that someone cares.

Hunger Drive – Raise the Bar Against Hunger

We’re excited to kick off our Fall Hunger Drive with “Raise the Bar Against Hunger,” running September 28 through October 12, to support our vital Backpacks for Hunger program that feeds kids and families in our 13 partner schools in the KC area. Our ambitious goal is to collect 150,000 kid-friendly protein bars (like Nature Valley, Clif, and Kind bars) to feed children in need throughout Kansas City for the entire year. We know that many kids in our community need nutritious snacks to keep them fueled and ready to learn, and we hope you’ll join us in making a huge difference in the lives of these children and their families. You can pick up a packet of door hangers at any one of our Resurrection locations or download them online to spread awareness in your neighborhood and share your faith—your participation in distributing these door hangers can significantly impact our community outreach by helping us reach our goal and provide essential nutrition to children who might otherwise go without. Ways to get involved

Join a Weekly Fill Event

Want to roll up your sleeves and serve? Volunteers are the heart of this ministry. Join us for a weekly fill, where we pack over 1,500 bags in about 90 minutes. Fills typically happen on Wednesdays at 4 pm and involve a lot of walking and movement—perfect for groups or individuals ready to make a tangible impact.
Children ages 9+ are welcome with one adult for every three children.

Serve Saturday: Olathe Partner Schools

Once the school year begins, we build meal sacks for our Olathe Partner Schools as part of our monthly Serve Saturday events.

Join us once a month to assemble bags filled with nutritious, kid-friendly food that helps support students facing food insecurity. It’s a simple, hands-on way to make a big difference—perfect for individuals, families, and groups of all ages.

Become a Delivery Saint

Help us get food into the hands of the kids who need it most.

Thursdays (8 am – 12 pm): Deliver food sacks to schools (requires heavy lifting; box truck driving may be involved).

Become a Backpack Angel

Help fight weekend hunger, one student at a time.

For many students in our partner schools, school meals are the only reliable source of nutrition they receive during the week. But what happens when the school doors close on Friday? Sadly, many children go home to empty cupboards and uncertainty.

That’s where our Backpacks for Hunger ministry steps in—and where you can make a powerful difference by becoming a Backpack Angel.

Each week, we send home over 1,500 backpacks filled with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food that ensures students have meals throughout the weekend. These bags contain kid-friendly items like oatmeal, protein bars, canned meals, fruit cups, and snacks—enough to get a child through the weekend with dignity and nourishment.

By becoming a Backpack Angel, you directly support this vital ministry.

  • A gift of $300 covers one student for an entire school year.

  • A recurring gift of $25/month helps keeps a child fed month after month.

Your contribution doesn’t just fill a bag—it fills a child with hope, energy, and the ability to return to school Monday morning ready to learn. It’s a simple, impactful way to be the hands and feet of Christ in a child’s life.

Give today and become a Backpack Angel. Together, we can ensure no child in our community goes hungry over the weekend.

Support From Home

Host a Protein Bar Drive: Small snack. Big Impact

Protein bars may seem like a simple item, but they are one of the most impactful additions to our Backpacks for Hunger bags. These bars are nutritious, non-perishable, and easy for kids to eat—making them the perfect weekend food item for students facing food insecurity.

Pray for the Children

We believe every backpack carries more than just food—it carries hope. Each week, we invite you to lift up the students receiving these bags in prayer. Ask that they would feel cared for, supported, and loved as they head into the weekend.
