Dear Resurrection Family,

I’ve got some important things to share with you today. And if you attend the traditional service at Leawood, TV or Online, be sure to read the last article on the new organ in the sanctuary. It was installed this week and you’ll hear it for the first time this weekend.

THIS WEEKEND IN WORSHIP: WHY? GOD, SUFFERING AND HOPE

Suffering and tragedy are a daily occurrence in our world. We see it daily on the news, and at times, we experience it personally in our lives. I sat with a woman in our congregation this week whose adult daughter was murdered last Sunday, and with three different families who had lost children to suicide over the last few years. One man expressed what many feel. In the darkest place, “I nearly lost my faith.”

When I speak to atheists and agnostics, the most frequently cited reason they tell me for their turning from faith is the issue of suffering. Most of us will have moments when we find ourselves asking God, “Why?” You may be struggling with this question right now, or you have friends who wrestle with reconciling the idea of a good and loving God with the tragedies in our world.

This weekend we kick off a four-week series of messages entitled, Why? God, Suffering and Hope. In this week’s message, we’ll begin looking at some wrong answers Christians sometimes give to the question of why. We’ll then consider three types of suffering and a better answer to the why question. Then, we’ll look at God’s response to human suffering, a response that gives our lives meaning and hope.

Who do you know who needs to hear this message? Many of you received a letter from me and invitation cards for you to share with a friend. Reach out to those who might be helped by this sermon series and invite them to join you. Here’s the 30-second video promo about the series that you can share on social media or email to a friend: CLICK HERE to watch and share.

DO YOU LISTEN TO PODCASTS?

Did you know that you can listen to Resurrection sermons on our podcast? We recently made some updates and relaunched the podcast with the title: Resurrection, A United Methodist Church. You can download the podcast through Apple and Spotify now, and soon on Google also. This sermon series would be a good one to share with a friend who is struggling with questions, but might not be ready to come to church.

EARTH DAY TOMORROW, APRIL 22

Tomorrow is Earth Day, a day set aside annually to encourage people to think about the role we can each play in caring for our planet. Did you know that the very first command God gave to humans was to be fruitful, to multiply, and to rule over the earth – in essence to act as stewards of God’s creation? (Genesis 1:26-31) This year’s Earth Day theme is “Invest in Our Planet,” and the website EarthDay.org has resources to help you learn more and get involved at the local, national and global levels. Why not have a conversation with your family and friends about this this weekend? What can you do to heal and care for the earth? The United Methodist Church also has a variety of resources on its Creation Care site. At Resurrection, we have an environmental ministry that you can learn about here. We can all do something to care for the earth, and to advocate on its behalf.

RESURRECTION LAUNCHES COMMUNITY GARDEN

I’m excited to invite you to come out and celebrate and join the fun in our new Community Justice initiative, The Giving Garden! We’ll have a short blessing of the garden and then get to work planting. There will be ongoing opportunities to help work in the garden. No gardening experience necessary, and this is a great opportunity for the entire family. All are welcome in the garden, please sign up to volunteer. CLICK HERE to register.

EASTER WORSHIP

For those who like to follow the numbers, I just received the final attendance numbers for Easter worship at all of our locations, online and television. We had 19,404 people worship with us in person at our six locations. We had another 13,454 join us online and 44,221 on television here in Kansas City, with another 18,776 who worshiped with us on television in Tulsa. We are testing the Tulsa area because our research has shown that this is a community where there are folks who already worship with us online and where some who are unchurched might resonate with our message. Total who worshiped with us for Easter in person, online and television: 95,855.

JOIN ME THIS TUESDAY FOR AN EVENING OF QUESTIONS

We had a great turnout last Tuesday night for our Conversations with the Senior Pastor. Thanks to all who joined us in person, online and on my Facebook Live Vespers. In case you missed it, you can watch on YouTube HERE.

I enjoyed fielding your questions and offering my responses. This weekend we’ll look at specific questions about the Bible, about the United Methodist Church’s position on abortion (and my own thoughts), our church’s racial justice statement from 2021, and as many of the other 100+ questions as I can fit into the evening. Join me this Tuesday, April 25, from 6:30 to 8 pm CDT in the Leawood sanctuary or online at resurrection.church/live or on my Facebook page. This event will take the place of my Vespers this week.

AHA MOMENTS AND RACIAL JUSTICE

I know you’ve been following the story of the shooting of Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old who made the mistake of ringing the doorbell at the wrong address. This incident has caught the nation’s attention, but it’s just one of the many tragedies that are occurring every day because we have become so fearful and divided.

Coincidentally, Allies for Racial Justice is hosting a special program tomorrow morning that my friend Pastor Emanuel Cleaver from St. James UMC and I will be participating in. We’ll be learning about President Harry Truman’s “aha moment” which helped him see how segregation was one of the biggest problems of the nation, and how he used his experience to bring about positive change.Since it began in 2016, Allies for Racial Justice, a partnership between Resurrection and St. James United Methodist Churches, has been trying to create positive change by informing and educating people, and building relationships between our two churches. The goal is that we can be part of the solution, instead of the problem related to racial divisions, bias and injustice. I believe this weekend’s event will be outstanding. Join us tomorrow, Saturday, April 22, from 9 am – noon in the Leawood Foundry. CLICK HERE to register. If you’d like to learn more and get involved with Allies for Racial Justice, here’s their website:  https://alliesforracialjustice.org

2023 QUARTER 1 GIVING STATEMENTS NOW AVAILABLE

We are continually amazed and humbled by the generosity of you, our donors. Thank you! Each gift you make is critical to providing the needed resources to support mission and ministry. The first quarter statements have been sent via email or mailed to those who request a paper statement.  If you receive your statement by email, look for the subject line “Important 2023 January-March Giving Statement”. We frequently hear from donors who find their statement in a spam or junk folder.  Take time to review your information and to confirm it is correct, including the amount of your monthly recurring gift if you have one set up. As of the end of March, our year-to-date giving is slightly less than our projected giving budget, so it is important as we plan, to know we have your information correct. If anything needs to be corrected, reach out to our Donor Relations Team at development@cor.org.

NEW ORGAN AT LEAWOOD

In 1998 we dedicated our Rodgers organ in our Leawood location sanctuary. It was one of the finest electronic organs at the time. It has served us well now for 25 years. But over the last few years, as it needed repairs, the chips and components (the brains of modern electronic organs) were becoming increasingly difficult to find. Finally, last year, we knew we needed to upgrade our organ (imagine still using your computer from 25 years ago!).

This week our new organ was finally installed. It is a Rodgers Organ new Infinity Series 489. It has four manuals, 89 stops, and an amazing, true-to-life pipe organ sound. It’s built around digital samples from the great organ from Notre Dame in Paris, the German organs of Bach, the organs in the great cathedrals of London and more. It has 531 total voices or sounds. I spoke to our Leawood organist, Rika Heruth and she was so excited about the dramatic improvements in this instrument, both its beautiful acoustics and the feel of the keys, pedals and stops.

You can click here to hear a new Infinity 489 – a hybrid version with both speakers and pipes – at Rocky River UMC in Ohio. At some point in the future Resurrection may wish to add pipes, but the organ sounds amazing as it is. You’ll have a chance to hear the organ for the first time this weekend. For those online and watching on TV, because the organ installation was not finished when we recorded the musical portions of the service this week, you’ll hear it for the first time on TV and online next weekend. We’ll have an organ concert and dedication next month. If you love traditional music and can join us in person at 11 am this weekend, please do so!

I’m looking forward to worshiping this weekend. See you then!

Adam
