Dear Resurrection Family,

Greetings from Salina, Kansas. Today I am at Kansas Wesleyan University along with over 30 of our Resurrection pastors and 39 Resurrection lay leaders who are attending the Great Plains Annual Conference. Each year, the pastors and lay representatives of every United Methodist Church in our conference (Kansas and Nebraska) gather to worship, to hear reports on our shared mission and ministry, to ordain and commission new clergy, and to discern God’s will for the United Methodist Church in our region. There are 1,100 delegates here and, in a sense, this kind of gathering is a modern and regional version of the Council of Nicaea we’re studying about in worship.

Here’s a photo of some of our Resurrection group as we gathered for supper last night and one from the conference.

WORSHIP THIS WEEKEND – THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE TRINITY AND THE CHURCH

This weekend is Pentecost, when Christians recall the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the earliest disciples 2,000 years ago, and on that day, the Church was born. The timing is perfect as we’ll conclude our two-part study of the Nicene Creed this weekend, turning to the Creed’s last section, which focuses on the Holy Spirit and the Church. We’ll also try to make sense of the Trinity and how Christians can claim that we worship one God, yet that God is at one and at the same time Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is one of the great theological conundrums of the Christian faith.

This weekend, we’ll turn to that part of the Nicene Creed that was written 56 years after the first part, at the Council of Constantinople. While Nicaea was addressing conflicts regarding Jesus, the bishops at the Council at Constantinople would edit and add to the Creed to address another controversy, on whether the Holy Spirit was God or something else. As with their decision regarding the Son, the Council affirmed that the Holy Spirit is “the Lord, the giver of life.” What an important thing to study on the Day of Pentecost, when the Council’s decisions also made a close association with the nature of the Trinity.
I think you’ll find this sermon not only fascinating, but also helpful and inspiring as we consider the Spirit’s role in your life.

NEW ORDAINED AND COMMISSIONED UNITED METHODIST CLERGY

Please join me in congratulating and praying for these pastors who will be ordained and commissioned on Saturday. Each of these clergy has been connected with Resurrection as a pastor, staff member or congregant.
Lydia Kim and Jimmy Yoo will be ordained as Elders in the United Methodist Church. Debbie Dellinger, Matt Ozment and Joyce Appel McCarty will be commissioned as Provisional Elders, and Rachel Fetters will be ordained as a Provisional Deacon.

JOIN THE SCHOOL MAKEOVER JUNE 18-27

Every summer, we have a special opportunity to have an impact on our community by working together in our partner schools to create environments where every student will feel welcome and inspired to learn. This year, the School Makeover is from June 18 through June 27, we will bless both the Woodland Early Education Center, one of our partner pre-Ks, as well as the Global Academy, a special program in the Kansas City, MO school district, that provides support for students transitioning to school and life in Kansas City. Over ten days, we’ll be painting, cleaning, repairing, and revitalizing all of their learning spaces.

No special skills are needed, just show up with a willingness to make a difference. This is also a great way to serve, and kids 12 and up are welcome to participate as well! We’re looking to get more than 500 volunteers for this summer project that will help us close the opportunity gap for so many kids in this community. I want to encourage you to gather your family, friends, or coworkers and sign up for a shift. If you’re a business owner or leader, consider this project as a team-building activity and an opportunity to share what your church is doing in the community with your employees. You can sign up here.

THIS WEEK’S PODCAST

This week on my podcast, Making Sense of Faith, I sit down with three remarkable young clergy who are reshaping what it means to be a pastor in today’s world. Fresh from a gathering Resurrection leads for United Methodist pastors, these emerging clergy share their deeply personal call stories and their bold vision for creating faith communities that nobody thinks could exist—places where progressive values meet ancient traditions, where doubts are welcomed alongside belief, and where diversity isn’t just tolerated but celebrated as a reflection of God’s kingdom. This conversation will inspire you and be one that I hope you’ll share with friends. You can listen to or watch the podcast by clicking here.

In Christ’s love,

Adam
