Ash Wednesday services at all Resurrection locations will be held on schedule today.
Scheduled programming has resumed for Thursday, February 13 at all Resurrection locations.
As you read this I am in Greenville, North Carolina speaking to the about 900 pastors and laity from the North Carolina Annual Conference. I spoke this morning with the young clergy of the annual conference, and last night with a group of pastors. Today my hope is to inspire, encourage and equip the leaders of the 450 United Methodist Churches in the eastern part of North Carolina to help their churches become more vital and to reach people in their communities. Would you please pause, right now, and pray that God will use me to bless these leaders and encourage them? Thank you!
This weekend is Father’s Day. We’ll pray for dads and honor them with a sweet treat at all locations!
This weekend, we’ll continue our sermon series on spiritual practices that change our lives, draw us closer to God, and help us become the people God longs for us to be. The series is called Becoming Better, and on this Father’s Day Weekend, we’ll look at the importance of serving, being the hands of Jesus in the world. Pastor Bill Gepford, a young dad himself and our Resurrection West location pastor will be preaching for Leawood, West, Blue Springs, online and on television. I’ve had the pleasure of being Bill’s pastor since he was a child. Pastor Bill heard his call to ministry here at Resurrection. He’s also a dad who brings his experience as a father to the task of preaching this Father’s Day Weekend. I’m looking forward to this weekend’s message and worship! Pastors Joshua, Wendy and Anne will preach at their respective locations. Each is an outstanding preacher.
If you’re traveling this summer, I hope you’ll include worship in your schedule. You can find all the ways and times to worship with us online at resurrection.church/worship.
This weekend we will be recognizing Rev. Sally Haynes at 9 am at Leawood and at 11 am at Brookside. Sally is retiring after 36 years of ministry in the United Methodist Church – a ministry that has transformed countless individual lives and churches. I’ve known Sally nearly all of that time and have appreciated her heart for Christ and her heart for people. She joined our team as Pastor in Residence after guiding Central UMC as the congregation went through the discernment process that led them to become Resurrection Brookside. Guided by her passion for the gospel and her compassion for people, Sally’s ministry has been one of truly embodying Micah 6:8 – to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. We wish Sally and her husband Andy all the best in Sally retirement. They plan to retire in Florida and Sally hopes to help connect Resurrection worshipers in Florida together! Thank you, Sally, for your faithful service to Christ!
Thank you to the 187 individuals who served 427 work shifts with this year’s School Makeover project. Work on two Early Childhood Centers in Kansas City, Kansas, included adding accent walls to every room, updating the entry bench and adding a chalkboard message wall and our muralist designed and painted a scene of frolicking lambs with multicolor skin tones to reflect the cultural diversity of the staff and students at Morse and constructing and installing a new pre-k appropriate playground at Bethel.
At Quindaro, our partner school in KCK, we added soccer and adjustable basketball goals to the field and blacktop as well as painted teacher lounges, multipurpose rooms, teacher work areas, wayfinding color blocks, and added a mural outside the library. In addition to serving on site, many others provided snacks and lunches which was greatly appreciated.
Here are just a few photos from the project.
This month, Resurrection is partnering with Suzanne Stabile, a well-known Enneagram expert, and author of The Journey Toward Wholeness, The Road Back to You, and The Path Between Us, to present a workshop on June 23 and 24 at our Leawood location and an online live stream. The workshop will help you learn more about the nine Enneagram types and how you can use that knowledge to have healthier relationships and a more fulfilling life. Sessions are Friday, June 23, 6 – 9 pm (with optional dinner from 5 – 6 pm) and Saturday, June 24, 9 am – 4 pm.
Starlight Theater is presenting the musical Jesus Christ Superstar next week, and will have a Faith Night, with a special pre-show program on Wednesday, June 21. From 6:30 – 7:45 pm, before the performance, you can have a BBQ buffet dinner and hear from local Christian leaders. Resurrection Overland Park’s Student Ministry Director Leah Swan-Miller will be one of the speakers. Leah will speak on trust in our daily lives and draw upon the themes of trust and mistrust in the musical. If you are interested you can go to kcstarlight.com/ThemeNights and use the code “FAITH” for a 25% discount on your ticket to the dinner and show.
Even though it’s the middle of summer travel season, this is the perfect time to consider joining one of our global serve trips in 2024. Sign-ups are open for trips to Honduras, Malawi, South Africa, Costa Rica and Uganda. These trips allow you to explore new cultures, meet new people, and encounter Christ by serving alongside others. If you are looking for a great adventure in service in the coming year, you can learn more on our website.
This week, I shared an impromptu Vespers from the lake on Wednesday night instead of Tuesday. This coming week I plan to join you for Vespers on Tuesday night at 7:30 pm CT from the Lake of the Ozarks as we pray and reflect upon life and faith together. Join me on Facebook Live at 7:30 pm Tuesday night!
