Dear Resurrection Family,
We were fortunate in Kansas City last weekend as storms caused devastation across the country. We did have to cancel worship services at our Blue Springs location because they lost power, and they have very little natural light in the sanctuary. The good news is that, because we are a church with multiple locations and online and television, our Blue Springs folks were still able to worship. Still, we’re glad power is back on!
As many in the metro were picking up storm debris, Resurrection volunteers were out demonstrating what it means to love your neighbors. We have a team that works with the City of Overland Park providing cleanup services to elderly, disabled and other high-need residents. You can find a variety of ways to serve the community on our website.
This week I met with our amazing college interns! We have 12 interns this summer, some grew up at Resurrection, and some learned about the program and applied. They are AMAZING! I had a chance to hear their stories, their hopes and dreams. Some are considering ministry as their career, and all of them, regardless of their career field, are hoping to be Christian leaders. If you meet one of our interns, welcome them and look for ways to bless them. The interns, along with mentors Bill Gepford and Michelle Kirby are pictured above. You can learn more about each intern and where they are serving at the end of this eNote.
For all you young adults, our Brookside location is hosting a block party on June 11 just for you. We’ll have food trucks, yard games, a chance to connect with others, and lots of fun! Plus, this is just the first event in our Young Adult Summer Series – stay tuned for more information, including a Young Adult and College Worship Night on July 23! This is the perfect way to kick off your summer and build some awesome connections. If you have questions, contact sierra.glaser@cor.org.
We’re just a few weeks away from our 2024 School Makeover. This year we’ll be sprucing up the classrooms and painting the hallways at Woodland Early Learning Center (711 Woodland Ave, Kansas City, MO 64106) from June 20 – 28. This is a chance to give back to our community and create a brighter, more inspiring place for the future generation. Click here to register to be part of something special and have fun working with others from Resurrection.
The Rummage Sale is not just a sale – all proceeds go to support women, children, and youth on the margins here in Kansas City. Everything we sell in the Rummage Sale comes from your donations – things like furniture and other items like used bikes, baby clothes, and framed art (be sure to check the list of items we can accept). Donation drop off will be Sunday, June 9, and Monday June 10. We’re also taking reservations for large item pick-ups and looking for volunteers to help. Details on are the website.
We still have open spots to join Pastors Cheryl Jefferson Bell and Robert Johnson on a trip September 10-16 that will help you learn more, connect and be inspired by the pivotal Civil Rights era. The trip will focus on Civil Rights history and you will visit places like Birmingham, AL, Tuskegee University, Montgomery, AL and Atlanta, GA. You’ll tour important sites from the civil rights movement, including museums and churches, and even attend a service at Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta. Learn more and sign up here.
I know many of you have guns that you enjoy for hunting, sport shooting, collecting or which you keep for protection. I support your right to have and use guns in these ways and appreciate your reasons for having them. I have also officiated at the funerals of more than a dozen people who were killed by those who should not have had access to guns, or by guns improperly stored; by guns used in suicides or against others in moments of passion. For these families touched by violence, and others who will be in the years ahead, I appreciate efforts to encourage gun safety and to reduce gun violence. Next Friday, June 7, is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Many will wear orange to draw attention to issue – orange is the color of safety vests worn in a variety of settings including hunting. City Hall, the Convention Center and many others will be lit in orange that night, and others will be wearing orange over the weekend as a way of remembering those who have died from senseless acts of violence.
I’ll be coming to you from the Lake of the Ozarks next Tuesday night. I’ll be spending time on Monday and Tuesday there working on our upcoming sermon series on God and the Stars. I’ll share a little about the series next Tuesday night. Join me for Vespers from the lake! 7:30 pm Central Time on Facebook Live which you can access here.
