Dear Resurrection Family,

This weekend, we celebrate Mother’s Day, a day first observed in 1908 in a worship service at a Methodist Church in West Virginia. Founder Anna Jarvis wanted this day set aside to honor “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”

At its heart, this day is an invitation to reflect on the people who helped shape us into who we are — whoever they were, however they came into our lives. For many, that’s a mother by birth, but it might also be a grandmother who shared her faith with us, an aunt who always picked up the phone, a family friend who kept an extra seat at the table, a mentor who believed in you, or a friend who showed up when it mattered most.

I am grateful for my Mom, Liz Miller, who is one of my and my siblings’ heroes. Her self-giving love and the sacrifices she made for us shaped who we are. And she continues to be a cheerleader in our lives. I thought I’d share our family photo from Easter at our home. These are my siblings, their spouses, mom’s  nephew and most of her grandkids. Most of us in this pic would not be alive were it not for her. None of us would be who we are without her sacrifices, love and encouragement. I so love her. And in this picture are five other moms, all of whom follow my mom’s example in selflessly loving and always encouraging their children.
Traditionally, white carnations are a symbol of Mother’s Day, and we’ll have a flower for every woman in worship this weekend.

THIS WEEKEND IN WORSHIP: JESUS, MONEY AND WORRY

This weekend, I’ll continue our series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. In a way, the Sermon on the Mount is a “greatest hits” of Jesus’ ethical and spiritual teachings. My message will begin with a bit of Mother’s Day humor, then turn to two of the most important and intertwined themes in our lives and in Jesus’ teachings – money and worry. Interestingly, Jesus speaks to both people struggling to make ends meet and those who have more than enough – each worries about money for different reasons. Then he gives several keys not only for combating worry, but for finding joy.
Want more joy and less worry in your life? Don’t miss this weekend. Invite a family member or friend to join you in worship this weekend. Everyone will benefit from this message. Here’s a link to all our worship locations and times.

WALL SIGNING IN NEW LEAWOOD CHAPEL THIS WEEKEND

This weekend at our Leawood location, you will have the opportunity to join in our historic tradition of writing our names and prayers inside the walls of each of our worship spaces as they are being constructed. This August, our new Wesley Chapel will open. This Sunday, following each worship service, you are invited to tour the new Wesley Chapel and to sign your names and write your prayers inside its walls. They will be sealed within these walls in the weeks ahead and remain a permanent part of the chapel. As we prepare for its opening later this year, don’t miss this special moment to include your name in this space and your prayers that God will use it to bless generations to come.

CHURCH CONFERENCE APPROVES TWO RESURRECTION MEMBERS AS DECLARED CANDIDATES FOR ORDAINED MINISTRY

At last week’s Church Conference, the church voted to recommend two Resurrection members as Declared Candidates for Ordained Ministry – Caitlyn Koebbe and Beau Stringer. They may now seek approval as Certified Candidates by the District Committee on Ordained Ministry. Caitlyn serves as the Children, Youth and Family Ministries Director and Assistant Contemporary Worship Leader at Saint Paul’s UMC in Lenexa and is pursuing ordination as an Elder. Beau serves as Director of Adult Discipleship at Resurrection Downtown and is on track to become a Licensed Local Pastor.

MAY IS NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

This year’s national theme is “More Good Days Together.” As Dr. Rebeca Chow, Resurrection Director of Clinical Counseling and Mental Health, reminds us, “We were not meant to carry life alone. More good days often begin when we feel seen, supported, and connected, and even a simple moment of care can make a meaningful difference.” She suggests that we start with ourselves by taking a moment to notice how we are feeling, what we need, and where support may help. Then, take one small step toward connection with others: send a kind text, check in, take a walk, share a meal, or listen with care.

I’m looking forward to celebrating mothers and the women in our lives and worshiping with you this weekend!

In Christ’s love,

Adam
