This coming week is our annual Leadership Institute. We’ll host over 1,400 pastors and church leaders in person and online. We have amazing guests, a host of powerful workshops, and meaningful times of worship. We launched Leadership Institute 24 years ago to inspire, encourage and equip church leaders as they seek to foster growing, dynamic congregations. More about this below.
This weekend as we continue in our study of the Holy Spirit, we’ll turn to the Book of Acts. Some have called this New Testament book, “The Gospel of the Holy Spirit” because in Acts the Holy Spirit’s work in the early church is central. The book begins with Jesus’ final words to his disciples, as he ascends to heaven, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).
Pastor Scott will be preaching, allowing me to write my Leadership Institute talks. He’s got a powerful sermon planned as he walks us through what happened on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon those first disciples, and then empowered the first Christians to take the gospel to the world.
Don’t miss worship this weekend. If you are in town, plan to worship in person, and if you are traveling or out of town, join us by worshiping online.
This is also an important Sunday for our first graders. At some services at each Resurrection location, they will parade in to join the congregation to celebrate their Milestone of Prayer – learning to pray the Lord’s Prayer this year. Each will also receive a copy of Pastor Adam and his granddaughter Stella’s book on The Lord’s Prayer.
Following the worship moment, there will also be an opportunity for first graders and their grown up to participate in a retreat (depending on your location) together where they will enjoy a prayer craft they can use at home. Register now for the retreat at your location
here.
SPECIAL SERVE SATURDAY AND YARD SIGN BLITZ TOMORROW!
Tomorrow morning, in addition to our regular Serve Saturday opportunities in the community, we’ll also be going out into the community to put up our Kindness Campaign yard signs. You can pick up signs at Resurrection locations on Saturday morning.
Click here for times and details. If you can’t do this Saturday, you can also take signs after worship on Sunday and help spread the message in the community.
SHOWING HOLY FRIT FILM ABOUT THE RESURRECTION WINDOW THURSDAY
As I noted above, our annual Leadership Institute is Wednesday through Friday of this coming week at our Leawood location. On Thursday night, September 26 at 7 pm, we’ll have a special showing of
Holy Frit, the film about the making of the Resurrection Window. This is for our Leadership Institute participants, but you are welcome to join and bring your friends. It’s free, and there is nothing like seeing this film in the sanctuary and being able to watch the film while being able to gaze up at the window. The film has won over a dozen awards and is now showing on Delta and Emirates Air and available on
streaming services. But there is nothing like sitting in the sanctuary and being able to look up and see the window as you watch the story of its creation. Join us for this free viewing and invite a friend. The film highlights the hope that one day the speakers of the window will be able to be removed. As you may have heard, this is going to happen in October!
(Note to parents: this is a documentary, and it includes some adult language and a few cigars – the filmmaker was seeking to capture the human drama of the making of the window, and how it almost didn’t get made.) For those interested, I’ll field a few questions following the film.
There will also be Resurrection Window jigsaw puzzles available for free to those who attend the showing of Holy Frit. Puzzles are available first come, first served, until they are gone!
HOW TO RAISE A CITIZEN PRESENTATION
More than 400 people, in person and online, joined us Monday at the American Public Square Event we hosted for a conversation with author and professor Dr. Lindsey Cormack about her book
How to Raise a Citizen. Her presentation was very informative, with lots of practical applications. I know I took away several new ideas for sharing with my granddaughter. If you missed it, or if you have friends who couldn’t be there, we have a recording that you can
view here.
DO UNTO OTHERS KINDNESS CAMPAIGN WORKSHOP SERIES
In the next 46 days, we’ll be inundated with polarizing political messages. Many are asking, “How can we do this better?” Resurrection is offering a three-week Do Unto Others Kindness Campaign workshop series, on Wednesdays throughout the month of October (October 9, 16 and 23). The workshops will be in person at Resurrection Leawood and streamed Online and at Resurrection Downtown.
Week one features author and Enneagram expert Jenn Whitmer. Week two welcomes John Fletcher, UMC lay leader and Louisiana State University professor, introducing the Braver Angels approach to improving dialogue skills and “disagreeing better.” The series concludes with Curtis Chang, consultant and former pastor, presenting “The After Party,” a pre-recorded talk on Christian political engagement followed by roundtable discussions. My hope is that Resurrection’s Republicans, Democrats and Independents will come together for these amazing events.
Each of these sessions offers information and tools to help us bridge the partisan divide and enhance our relationships with family, friends and co-workers. The cost for attending all workshops is $30. A meal is included for those attending the workshops in person at Leawood, and childcare is available for those attending in person. You can learn more and register here.
All of this is part of Resurrection’s 2030 Vision of Closing the Kindness and Civility Gap in Kansas City.
JOIN THE LONGEST TABLE EVENT AT BROOKSIDE
Resurrection Brookside is hosting a special event on Saturday, Sept. 28, from Noon – 1 pm called the Longest Table. In recognition of National Neighbor Day, they will be sharing lunch with friends and neighbors at tables set up along the Trolley Trail in front of Resurrection Brookside. Each table host invites seven people to join them for lunch and provides paper products, a main dish, side items and optional drinks. There are still a few opportunities to be a table host and join this fun community activity. If you are interested, you can learn more and
sign up here.
TUESDAY VESPERS TO BECOME “MAKING SENSE OF” PODCAST
During COVID I began a Tuesday night broadcast on Facebook Live aimed at encouraging viewers during a frightening time and helping people remain connected when we could not meet in person. I’ve loved doing this and continued it for the last four years, coming to you live from my back porch, from the lake, from my basement or the church, and even from other parts of the world.
Over the last few years, we’ve also been considering how Tuesday Vespers might have a broader reach, connecting with both thoughtful Christians, but also with people who have questions and doubts, non-religious and nominally religious people, something that would be easy for you to share with your friends or family who don’t go to church. We would like to keep the same conversational feeling of Vespers but take it up a notch in terms of quality and make it available to people who don’t use Facebook but do listen and watch podcasts.
We’ve had several people looking at this, and meeting with a consultant who has helped develop some of the leading religious podcasts in the U.S. As they asked about my passion as a pastor and our passion as a church, the answers focused on helping people make sense of life, faith, the Bible, theology, spirituality, religion, and ethics including challenging moral issues.
Beginning after the election, on Wednesday, Nov. 6, we’ll launch this new podcast. We’re tentatively calling it, “Making Sense of Faith,” or “Making Sense of Religion” though we’re still nailing this down. It would have the conversational feel of Vespers but come in the format of a podcast. We’ll take on questions and topics that will interest both Christians and non-Christians, and I hope to reach a broad audience and, I hope, draw listeners to Christ and consider getting involved in a local church. The week it launches, the topic will be the two things polite people are not to talk about, “Religion and Politics.”
If you have any suggestions for names of the podcast, topics or questions we should consider addressing, or anything else that might be helpful, click here and email Matt Williams who is driving this project.

In the meantime, join me for the final six Vespers each Tuesday night between now and November 5. I’ll go live at 7:30 pm this week from my home in Stilwell as we discuss where faith meets life.

I’m looking forward to an amazing weekend in worship!
