Daily Scripture

2 Peter 3:13-18

13 But according to his promise we are waiting for a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.
14 Therefore, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found by him in peace—pure and faultless. 15 Consider the patience of our Lord to be salvation, just as our dear friend and brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, 16 speaking of these things in all his letters. Some of his remarks are hard to understand, and people who are ignorant and whose faith is weak twist them to their own destruction, just as they do the other scriptures.
17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been warned in advance, be on guard so that you aren’t led off course into the error of sinful people, and lose your own safe position. 18 Instead, grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To him belongs glory now and forever. Amen.

Daily Reflection & Prayer

At Resurrection we have chosen a set of goals (that you can see—or review—at https://resurrection.church/about-resurrection/vision2030/). Basic to all of them is to “deepen the spiritual vitality of all Resurrection members.” Jesus said God calls us to be “the light of the world,” (cf. Matthew 5:14-16), through whom God’s light brightens the dark, hurting places around us. We always have room for further growth in doing that. Early in the movie Black Panther, new king T’Challa’s brilliant half-sister Shuri tells him she wants to show him how she’s improved the Black Panther suit. He tells her his suit works fine. Shuri insists: “Just because something works doesn’t mean it can’t be improved.” The apostle Peter had a similar outlook on spiritual life. Grace “works,” but that means it provides a climate of love and acceptance in which we keep growing, not an excuse for indifference about areas where we need to grow.

  • Scholar William Barclay wrote, “The Christian must daily experience the wonder of grace, and daily grow in the gifts which grace can bring; and he must daily enter more and more deeply into the wonder which is in Jesus Christ.” * That’s a lot of “dailies”! But what food program says eating once a week will make you strong? What exercise plan says training once a week is fine? How do you choose to “grow in grace” every day? “Growing in grace” is not just cerebral. “It is impossible to stand still as a Christian, for we all have an in-built tendency to push Jesus Christ to the back of our minds. The only remedy is to make deliberate, constant and frequent efforts to bring him to the front…. We need to know more about him, to be sure; but we also grow in that knowledge by obeying him, by treating his promises as genuine promises of the Savior, and his commands as genuine commands of the Lord.” ** In what ways are you growing in trusting and obeying what you know about Jesus?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, give me the gift of honesty with myself so that I can recognize where I need to change. Show me the places where you call me to grow in your amazing grace. Amen.

Cheryl Bell serves as Resurrection's Pastor of Community Justice. She was born and raised in Detroit, completed college in Atlanta, Georgia and seminary in Enid, Oklahoma. She settled in Kansas in 1985 to work for Boeing, and answered the call to fulltime ministry in 1990. "The JOY of the Lord is my strength" (Nehemiah 8:10).

Of course, I would end up with this GPS topic of Grow in Grace and Knowledge. Although I’m not far from retirement and I have some miles under my belt, I have figured out that I still have things to learn. I still have room to grow in grace and in knowledge! It can be a lifelong journey. And it should be!

I have been a pastor for over 30 years. I have had the privilege of walking along side many people, who have allowed me to share sacred times with them. It has been an honor and a blessing and I hope they were blessed as well.

I have learned over the last couple of months that even though I have been with many families who have lost loved ones, and I have also experienced the loss of some of my loved ones, the depth of the grief I have experienced has been so deep in my soul. One person talked about the layers of grief that can be overwhelming. And it has been. Many of you know what I am talking about. There just aren’t words that can express how I feel.

I’m grateful for today’s lesson. How should we be waiting for a new heaven and a new earth? How do we carry on in this life, with its ups and downs, its ins and outs, its births and deaths? Are we to be so heavenly minded that we are of no earthly good? No! We need to be mindful, intentional, purposeful in how we live our lives, on a daily basis. A lesson that I know and need to be reminded of! Remembering that we are God’s children. Remembering that God has promised to never leave us or forsake us, especially in our hard days, can provide a peace that surpasses all understanding. Scripture helps in times like this. Not only are we reminded of who we are, but whose we are.

This truth hit me as I revisited over and over again the 23rd Psalm. I have it memorized. But in a different situation, I heard it anew. I recited it as my prayer. I recited it as our prayer for that moment. It was as if I were hearing it for the first time. I’m grateful for The Living Word of God, how God’s Spirit helps us in our time of need. I was open to the nudging that helped me find the right words at the right time. It was a time of growing in grace and knowledge.

Thanks be to God, who loves us, who forgives us, who helps us, who hears us, who provides for our needs, who pours out grace and helps us to grow in our knowledge. What a Mighty God we serve! Amen and Amen!
