Daily Scripture

Matthew 22:34-40, NRSV

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, an expert in the law, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Daily Reflection & Prayer

The interdependence between love of God and love of others demonstrated in Jesus’ answer in today’s Scripture reading is essential to our lives of faith. His answer precludes a “Just Jesus and me” way of living, as if the life of following Jesus was primarily about personal development. It also precludes a life of service apart from God, as if a life of following Jesus were only about the good works we do for others. This beautiful life described in Jesus’ answer is BOTH: it’s a life lived in deep devotion to God that is evidenced by the love we demonstrate to others.
Most of us have varying degrees of success in living Jesus’ answer in our daily lives. I’m drawn to the contemplative life, and if I don’t keep the whole of Jesus’ answer before me, I can find myself practicing a faith without works (James 2:14–17). Maybe you have the same challenge.
Some of us are great at doing good things for others, but struggle to invest in our relationship with God. Good works are good, but they are less than the beautiful life Jesus has for us. We were made not only to serve God, but to walk with God as we serve. How much more powerful is the work done by the person who is fueled by the deep and abiding love of God for others!
The beautiful life is a life lived with God for the sake of others.
What is your tendency? Do you need to grow in your love for God or do you need to grow in your love for others? Both are essential. What might be something you could do this week to move forward in one of these areas?
Join me in praying:
Prayer
Wonderful and Holy God,
Thank you that I get to be a part of what you are doing in this world.
Thank you that you invite me into deeper relationship with you.
Thank you that you empower me to love others like you love them.
Give me grace and courage to grow in my love for you and others.
Show me how I can get to know you better.
Show me where I can serve others better.
Then send me out to do your work again and again,
So that I can join you in making this world a little bit more like your kingdom.
Help me to do all of this with your mercy and love,
Amen.
