Daily Scripture

Matthew 2:13-15a (NRSV)

Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream (again) and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’  Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod.

Daily Reflection & Prayer

It’s December 28th. Christmas is over. 2026 is days away. This liminal space between Christmas and New Year’s Day is a strange and unique space. The current year isn’t quite done, and the new year isn’t here yet. It’s like a house a few days before a move, where most—but not everything—is packed up and waiting for the moving truck to back into the drive. Many of us slow down a bit and have some time we don’t normally have. And yet, there isn’t much time left to accomplish anything significant in the waning year.
At least in the U.S., this cultural rhythm allows for some time to reflect on the year that’s passing into history. Not everyone is inclined to sit and reflect on their past experiences, but today, as you read this, I encourage you to pause and consider the year that’s drawing to a close.
More specifically, I invite you to look back over your year with this one question in mind: *
“Where was God with me this past year?”
This might look like a moment of providence, when something came together or you had a sudden insight that changed the way you thought about something—or someone. It might include moments of joy with friends or family, or even a quiet satisfaction in a job well done. Even in challenging times this past year, God’s presence may have been revealed through someone’s kindness toward you.
God was with you in 2025. This time of prayer is an opportunity to become aware of some of those moments. God will be with you in 2026. And best of all, God is with us right now.
Prayer
Glorious and blessed God,
Thank you for the time you have given me.
Thank you for 2025.
Now, as I spend some time in prayer with you,
please bring to mind the times when you were with me this past year.
(Pause and see what comes to mind)
Thank you that you are always with me.
I am never alone.
Amen.

* If this is a particularly hard time for you, this might not be the best time to do this exercise. That’s OK. Wait another week or two and do it with someone else—or don’t do it at all. That’s also OK.
