Prayer Tip--Humbling the Proud, Lifting Up the Lowly

Daily Scripture

Luke 1:46-53 (NRSV)

Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.”

Daily Reflection & Prayer

It is easy to feel powerful today. The world we live in provides us with things like the power to type on a keyboard and make groceries appear on our doorstep, news of the whole world available at the click of a button, and instructions for fixing our dishwasher are just a few YouTube videos away.
Then something comes along. The serious illness of a dear friend, a job that disappears suddenly, news that makes us feel powerless and afraid.
Today we hear the voice of Mary. In her time, in the world where she lived, you couldn’t find a much more powerless person. Young, from a poor village, female. Then God chooses her to bring the Messiah into the world, to raise him to adulthood, see his ministry grow, and watch him die on a cross to make salvation possible for us all.

She doesn’t suddenly become impressed with her own power and prestige. She doesn’t speak of the generations calling her powerful. She sings out words of praise and thankfulness that God has chosen her for this particular path. She calls herself blessed and praises God for his mercy and strength and love shown to the non-powerful.

Today, as we learn more about Mary, let’s let our prayers be like hers – full of praise and appreciation for God’s love and care, even knowing we are powerless.
Prayer
Lord God, Mighty One, who does great things for all who seek him and follow the life his Son taught us,
Make us more like this powerless young woman–humble, thoughtful, full of praise for your love and grace.
Amen.
