Prayer Tip--The Crucifixion as God’s Word

Daily Scripture

John 1:1, 14a (CEB), Romans 5:15 (CEB) and 1 Corinthians 15:22, 45 (CEB)

In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was with God
and the Word was God…
The Word became flesh
and made his home among us.

The free gift of Christ isn’t like Adam’s failure. If many people died through what one person did wrong, God’s grace is multiplied even more for many people with the gift—of the one person Jesus Christ—that comes through grace.

In the same way that everyone dies in Adam, so also everyone will be given life in Christ…The first human, Adam, became a living person, and the last Adam became a spirit that gives life.

Daily Reflection & Prayer

In this season of Lent we are contemplating as a congregation the question, “Why did Jesus have to die?” This is a question many brilliant minds have considered for centuries before you and I arrived here on earth, and it will be considered for centuries after we’re gone. As Methodists, we approach the question with humility, exploring Scripture, consulting tradition, engaging reason, and considering our experience. We humbly seek to understand and at the same time, we are willing to hold our understanding loosely. Let this exploration nurture within us the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
I invite you to pray this prayer this morning in preparation for this message:

Prayer
Glorious and blessed God,
Thank you for the gift of your Son
Thank you for the insights
of those who came before me
Help me to make my own contributions
in this long unbroken line of faith
Thank you that even though I may not know
why Jesus had to die
I know that it matters
I’m grateful for this Gift
I don’t have to be a slave
to brokenness and sin
Help me to say “yes” to this Gift
each and every day
embracing your mercy and grace
and yielding myself to you.
May it be so again today
and tomorrow.
and for all the days of my life.
In the name the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Amen.
