Daily Scripture

Matthew 26:26-30 (NRSV)

While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”  Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.  I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Daily Reflection & Prayer

In today’s passage, Jesus shares his final Passover meal before his arrest, trial, and crucifixion. It must have been a bittersweet moment, knowing what was ahead. He chose to sit at the table with his disciples, fully aware that one would betray him, another would deny him, and all would desert him. I’m not sure I could have done that. His actions speak volumes about his love.
That meal became more than a moment—it became a practice. The Church began gathering around the table, and over time this became Holy Communion.
Holy Communion—the Lord’s Supper, the Eucharist—is more than a symbol. It is a sacred gift: a reminder of what Christ has done for us and a way God meets us with grace. In this mystery, Christ is present with us, strengthening us with the grace we need to live as his people—to love others and reflect his kingdom in the world.
This weekend, we will receive Holy Communion together at all of our locations. As you come to the table, I invite you to pray:
Prayer
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery
in which you have given yourself to us.
Grant that we may go into the world
in the strength of your Spirit,
to give ourselves for others,
in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
