In-person programs have been canceled until Wednesday at 5 PM at each of the church’s locations, with the exception of recovery meetings, backpack stuffing for school partners, and the food pantry at Overland Park, which will each continue as scheduled.
The church will reopen on Wednesday at 5 pm for all scheduled programs.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it… To all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.
The author of the gospel of John opens his book with one of the most beautiful and powerful word pictures in Scripture that describes Jesus. Poetic in its repetition, it serves to dispel any doubts about the divinity and supremacy of Jesus, the Son of God. It was intended to be read aloud, and so I invite you today to find a quiet place by yourself where you can pray this prayer out loud. Pay attention to what happens inside you as you pray these words.
Group exercise: Sometime this week find time to pray this prayer out loud with your family, friends, or even in your small group. Choose someone to read the unbolded lines, and then have everyone read the bolded lines together.
Dear Lord Jesus,
In the beginning, you were.
You were with God.
You are God.
You were in the beginning with God.
Come Lord Jesus and have your way.
All things came into being through you.
Without you, nothing has come into being.
Come Lord Jesus and have your way.
What has come into being in you is life.
That life is the light of all people.
The shines in the darkness
And the darkness cannot overcome it.
Come Lord Jesus and have your way.
To all who receive you
Who believe in your name
You give power
To become the children of God
Come Lord Jesus and have your way.
I receive you
I believe in your name
I am a child of God
Come Lord Jesus and have your way.
