Borderlands - Day 4

4/26/26

Borderlands: April 19 - 24, 2026

Hello from the Borderlands. For my readers who prefer an executive summary, sorry, this is a bit long.

Our group experienced another full day of learning and reflection on both sides of the border.

We met an ecumenical group of local clergy and sisters holding weekly prayer vigils outside the immigration courtyard in downtown El Paso. Clergy from California and St. Louis also joined to support.

We crossed into Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. We explored global migration, root causes of displacement, and clarified misconceptions about migration.

We visited a historical site, where Daniel, a local historian, gave an engaging account of the Mexican Revolution, which ended Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship. American citizens—mercenaries, journalists, and spectators—helped the rebels win. This narrative deepened our understanding of the enduring cross-border culture and community, which the media often misrepresents. Similar relationships exist along many southern and northern borders.
At the site, on the other side of the border and the border wall, we saw former “National Defense Areas” converted into military installations and noticed Border Patrol and military vehicles along the wall.

— If you are interested, note the picture of the wall, the yellow posts, and the cable. The posts and cables are the actual border. The space between the posts, cable, and wall serves as a buffer. Technically, we could not walk past the cab to the wall, as that would be entering the US improperly by not going through customs.

We went downtown for dinner and were dropped off at a bridge. Many people, including Lydia Patterson Institute students, cross daily for work and school. We reentered the US by showing passports and passing through customs, like returning from vacation.
