This past Saturday, our Team Welcome Immigration and Refugee Ministry traded in our usual routines for something a little faster-paced—and a lot more colorful—as we participated in the Flourish Furnishings Bed Race Event.
Yes, a bed race.
Teams from across the community designed and built rolling beds. Then they raced them down the course with four runners and a brave “driver” holding on for the ride. Our team embraced the challenge with creativity and energy, building a push racecar-style bed ready for speed.

We chose a World Cup theme, celebrating the diversity and global connections at the heart of our ministry. Decked out in international colors, our runners reflected the unity and joy that come from people of different backgrounds working toward a shared goal.
The race itself was equal parts chaos and celebration. From start to finish, there was laughter, cheering, and just enough friendly competition to keep things exciting. Our driver held steady. Our runners gave it their all. And our racecar bed held together—always a win in an event like this!

More than just a race
Beyond the race, the event reminded us why we do what we do. Flourish Furnishings supports families—many of them refugees and immigrants—by providing essential home furnishings that help turn houses into homes. It was meaningful for our team to support that mission in such a hands-on and joyful way.
Events like this reflect the heart of Team Welcome: showing up, building community, and celebrating the richness of cultures that make our neighborhoods stronger. Whether racing down the track or cheering from the sidelines, we were proud to be part of something that brings people together in a tangible way.
We may not have taken home the trophy, but we walked away with something better—shared memories, stronger connections, and a renewed sense of purpose.
And who knows? Next year, we might just come back even faster.
