When the storms hit Kansas City, they left more than damaged homes behind. Thousands of families were without power, refrigerators were emptied, and people were suddenly facing needs they hadn’t planned for.

As the damage became clear, our community partners began reaching out to Resurrection for help. Hunger quickly became one of the greatest needs. Families who had lost power had also lost the food in their refrigerators and freezers, while others were struggling to find a place to stay as the outages continued.

Our amazing Hunger Ministry volunteers stepped in right away. Within days, they delivered meal boxes to Quindaro Elementary as students returned to a school that had just regained power, prepared 200 sack lunches, and provided financial support to Avenue of Life to help families stay in hotels while they remained without power.

But the need didn’t end when the power started coming back. A week later, many families were still without electricity. Resurrection volunteers set up a drive-through pantry at the Quindaro Community Center, providing fresh produce, meat, eggs, dairy, and other perishables to 300 families.

What happened after the storms is a good picture of what community partnership can look like. Our partners were already there, listening to families and seeing what was needed. They reached out, and we were able to come alongside them with food, volunteers, and resources.
