We Are Disciples, Not Heroes: Why Service Is Discipleship

We Are Disciples, Not Heroes

Jesus teaches us throughout Scripture how to care for one another—to notice, welcome, feed, love, and serve. But there’s something else that happens when we serve.

The people we believe we are called to serve often end up discipling us. The person we thought needed our help teaches us about resilience. The person we thought needed our compassion teaches us about grace. The person whose story is different from ours helps us see God differently.

That’s why we say: We are disciples, not heroes. When we serve, we aren’t bringing Jesus to people who don’t have Him. We are meeting Christ already at work. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 25, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for me.” So we show up ready to help—but also ready to listen. Ready to learn. Ready to build relationships. And ready to be changed. Because service isn’t separate from discipleship. Service is discipleship.

And there is a place for you in it.

Come serve with us. Show up with an open heart, meet some of your neighbors, and discover what God might teach you through the people you meet along the way.
