Juneteenth 2026: Resurrection Lee’s Summit Hosts a Celebration of Freedom and History

Juneteenth celebration Lee's Summit

Resurrection Lee’s Summit was the host for Juneteenth 2026 on June 20thPastor Cheryl Jefferson Bell welcomed the packed house with a greeting and a responsive prayer. The congregation and choir then sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” one of the most cherished songs from the Civil Rights Movement, often referred to as the Black National Anthem. This set the tone for Juneteenth 2026: A Celebration of Black History, Freedom and Hope. From there, the afternoon unfolded through worship, music, dance, storytelling, and learning.

Presented by Allies for Racial Justice, a partnership between St. James and Resurrection United Methodist Churches, the event brought together 450 people from both congregations and the wider community. Isaac Cates and the One Accord Choir had the congregation lifting their hands and raising their voices with their songs. The Praising Grace Dance Team and Devion Williams shared their gifts through dance and music, keeping the congregation on their feet. Sandra Lamb introduced her exhibit, “The Hidden History of the Black West,” inviting attendees to learn stories that are often overlooked. Linda Hughes of Lead to Read KC spoke about the organization’s work and the ways volunteers can make a difference in the lives of children across the Kansas City area. Keynote speaker Dr. James Leiker explored Kansas history in his presentation, “How Free Was the Free State?” offering historical context that encouraged thoughtful reflection.

The afternoon combined celebration with education, creating space to remember the significance of Juneteenth while learning more about the history that continues to shape our communities today. Bringing people together to acknowledge the past helps break down barriers, deepen understanding of our differences, and recognize the similarities we share.

As the event came to a close, many participants commented on how much they appreciated both the music and the educational presentations. Throughout the afternoon, there was a shared sense that God was at work among those gathered. The words of Micah 6:8 echoed the spirit of the day:

What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
