On Wednesday, September 9, over 60 people gathered to kick off the 2026–2027 season of Backpacks for Hunger.
Backpacks for Hunger began at Resurrection in 2008 to address a gap faced by students experiencing food insecurity. While school meal programs provide critical nutrition during the school week, weekends can leave students without the same reliable access to food. Backpacks for Hunger helps bridge that gap.
This volunteer-led and volunteer-operated program runs throughout the school year, providing one bag of food each week to every participating student across nine of Resurrection’s Partner Schools, helping address food insecurity over the weekend.
The need remains significant, with principals at our Partner Schools identifying food insecurity, financial hardship, and reductions in federal support among the greatest challenges facing their students and families.
Most Wednesday afternoons at 4:00 PM at Resurrection Leawood, volunteers gather to assemble these bags for the schools. In the first week, the team assembled 1,756 bags and packed them into tubs by school and classroom. As more students are added to the program, we expect that number to grow to over 1,900 bags a week by the third week. After the bags are assembled, our amazing Truck Ministry volunteers delivered the tubs full of bags to the nine supported Partner Schools.
All this ministry happens because of the hundreds of volunteers at Resurrection who pull together each week because they want to show God’s love to others. We’d love to have you join us.
